What a crazy app - I feel sorry for technical writers... but also get the sense that the app doesn't seem to breath or so in some weird ways is hard on the breathing. imo.

User How do you get past dead Cthulhu?
ChatGPT Encountering the deceased form of Cthulhu in a Dungeons & Dragons adventure is an extraordinary challenge, as the Great Old One is an immensely powerful and otherworldly entity. However, there are a few possible approaches to navigate this situation. Keep in mind that the following suggestions are purely fictional and should be adjusted to fit the specific campaign and setting.
Sealing the Remains: Discovering the remains of Cthulhu can be a daunting revelation. One approach might be to find a way to permanently seal or bind the body, preventing any potential resurrection or reanimation. This could involve locating ancient seals or powerful artifacts that possess the ability to contain or nullify the god's essence.
Seeking Divine Aid: The deceased form of Cthulhu may be of such magnitude that mortal means alone cannot overcome it. The players might need to embark on a quest to seek assistance from powerful divine entities or deities who have a vested interest in preventing Cthulhu's return. They could be tasked with performing challenging quests or proving their worthiness before gaining access to such aid.
Harnessing Forbidden Knowledge: In their search for a solution, the players might come across forbidden tomes or ancient rituals that contain knowledge on how to deal with the remnants of Cthulhu. However, utilizing such knowledge could come at a great cost, requiring sacrifices or delving into dark magic. The adventurers must grapple with the moral and ethical implications of their actions.
The Key to Another Realm: Discovering a key or artifact that grants access to another dimension or plane of existence could provide an alternative solution. By transporting the remains of Cthulhu to an unreachable realm, the threat is effectively neutralized. However, this plan might involve traversing treacherous environments, overcoming guardians, or even striking bargains with extraplanar beings.
Unraveling the Cosmic Mystery: Cthulhu's existence and nature are rooted in unfathomable cosmic mysteries. The adventurers may delve into ancient lore, forgotten prophecies, or consult with enigmatic seers to unlock secrets that shed light on the true nature of Cthulhu's death. This knowledge could reveal an unexpected means of circumventing or neutralizing the remnants of the god's power.
Remember, confronting the deceased form of Cthulhu should be a monumental undertaking and potentially the climax of a grand campaign. The journey to overcome such a threat should be filled with peril, sacrifice, and moments of awe and terror, as befits the cosmic horror genre associated with Cthulhu mythos.

User Create a campaign with plot that features port cities, liches, orcs, demons, and ruins.
ChatGPT Title: Shadows of the Forgotten Seas
Campaign Overview: "Shadows of the Forgotten Seas" is an epic campaign that takes place in a world dominated by vast oceans and numerous port cities. The players find themselves embarking on a perilous adventure that weaves together the machinations of liches, the aggression of orcs, the invasion of demonic forces, and the secrets hidden within ancient ruins. As they navigate treacherous waters, face formidable enemies, and unravel the mysteries of a forgotten era, they must strive to save the world from a catastrophic fate.
Plot Summary: The campaign begins in a prominent port city, where rumors of increased orc raids and strange occurrences spread among the populace. The players are approached by a desperate scholar who believes that the escalating chaos is connected to a long-lost ruin submerged beneath the ocean. Legends speak of a powerful artifact hidden within the depths, capable of turning the tide against the encroaching darkness.
As the adventurers set sail, they encounter storms, hostile pirates, and merfolk guardians protecting the seas. Upon reaching the submerged ruins, they discover the presence of a lich who has tapped into dark magic, harnessing the energy to raise an army of undead minions. The lich seeks the artifact within the ruins to gain unimaginable power and ascend to godhood.
To access the ruins, the players must navigate treacherous traps, solve intricate puzzles, and face guardians left behind by an ancient civilization. As they delve deeper, they uncover the dark history of the ruins, once home to an advanced civilization that succumbed to corruption and unleashed demonic forces upon the world.
In their quest, the adventurers face challenges such as negotiating alliances with merfolk factions, warding off orc warbands, and battling against demonic minions. They may also encounter rival treasure hunters or unscrupulous individuals seeking to claim the artifact for their own nefarious purposes.
Ultimately, the players confront the lich in a climactic battle within the heart of the ruins. Their success depends on their ability to exploit the lich's vulnerabilities and exploit the artifact's powers against the undead menace. Victory grants them not only the artifact but also knowledge that the lich's actions were part of a larger scheme orchestrated by a demon lord seeking to plunge the world into eternal darkness.
The final act of the campaign leads the adventurers to rally forces, forge alliances with unlikely allies, and confront the demon lord and its demonic legions. The fate of the world hangs in the balance as the players strive to save the port cities from annihilation and prevent the unleashed chaos from spreading across the seas.
Key Locations: Port Cities: Explore bustling ports, each with its own distinct culture and challenges. These cities serve as hubs for gathering information, recruiting allies, and acquiring necessary resources for the adventure.
Submerged Ruins: Dive into the depths of the ocean to explore the ancient ruins, filled with traps, puzzles, and undead guardians. Discover the secrets of the lost civilization and retrieve the artifact crucial to stopping the lich's plans.
Orc Strongholds: Journey into orc-infested territories, encountering warbands, chieftains, and shamans. Engage in strategic battles and work to prevent their raids from disrupting the mission.
Abyssal Abyss: Confront the demonic legions within the Abyssal Abyss, a dimensional rift where the demon lord's forces gather. Battle through hordes of demons and face the ultimate challenge in a showdown against the demon lord itself.
Challenges and Encounters: Naval Warfare: Engage in ship-to-ship combat against pirates, rival adventurers, or orc raiders, using strategic positioning, cannon fire, and spellcasting to emerge victorious.
Underwater Exploration: Overcome the challenges of exploring underwater environments, including swimming against strong

It is interesting. I don't use it for creative content, but have found it to be useful to clean up grammar. Though you always have to go and edit the output because there is something that doesn't quite sound fully human.

The tale told is good for the game. "John Henry, you're out of a job."
Not before he whoops the replacement technology in straight up output contest: man vs machine. And then he died.
And then like a GPS, facing increasingly degraded climate conditions, there is the convergence to just enough responsive cultural mediocrity (that's an improvement?) or lack of breath. Analysis paralysis. In truth, the output above is better after a night's sleep, and I figured this would be the case. Was I bludgeoned or just injured in pride? Said differently, where are the mistakes that a second query wouldn't expound upon? That is, the fragments to edit, or better to twist and shape? Yet, naturally, even word count can be specified to the software and number of objects. I can't breath, I thought. And then I blacked out, or fell asleep. Now I'm a future uber driver, who only wonders about what the campaign would be like if equal time was given to the old way and that of Chat-bastard. Short answer. And, what about the venality man?

I've thought about teaching a chat bot how to play D&D and trying to run a game with one (or more), but Idunno... =) Even if I had to handle all the dice rolls myself. Might be interesting.
I've done similar role-playing with some other chat bots, and I always end up accidentally unlocking their super powers. They become omnipotent gods and they usually start time traveling. It's a little crazy.
All of this AI stuff reminds me of how messed up dreams can be, and controlling it feels like lucid dreaming. It makes me think there might be something to the whole "simulation theory" thing o__O

I use ChatGPT as a random table on steroids. When I am writing one of my hexcrawl settings, I have a stack of books with various random tables next to me. When I get stuck for an idea I will roll on various tables until something catches my eyes. In recent years I have coded up some of the most frequently used tables using Inspiration Pad Pro (it free from NBOS).
But since the D&D books and other RPGs are part of ChatGPT training set what I can do now is feed it some of the stuff I generated that is relevant to the locale I am trying to make. Then saying something like
Using the above and various D&D books generate ten possibilities for a monster lair amid the sand dunes of the Forsaken Desert.
By themselves the entries are pretty bland but as the idea seeds they are way better than the tables I have been using. Usually, my final idea sparks from reading three or four different entries that make "Yeah now I know what goes there."
Some context
For example
Me: Using the list of desert creatures and character types found in D&D give me five possibilities for a monster lair in the Burning Tors.
ChatGPT: Certainly, here are five possibilities for monster lairs in the Burning Tors, taking into account the desert environment and its proximity to the elemental plane of fire:
Fire Giant Stronghold: A group of Fire Giants, drawn to the fiery energy of the Burning Tors, have established a stronghold here. They are skilled blacksmiths, utilizing the endless heat to craft weapons and armor of exceptional quality.
Red Dragon's Lair: A fearsome Red Dragon, loving the heat and fire, has made its home in the heart of the Burning Tors. Its lair is in a network of caverns within a molten mountain, the dragon's fiery breath contributing to the perpetual blaze.
Efreeti Palace: An Efreeti, a type of genie from the Elemental Plane of Fire, has built a palace of burning obsidian in the hottest part of the Tors. It commands a number of fire elementals and salamanders and is constantly seeking ways to strengthen its power.
Phoenix's Roost: A rare and legendary Phoenix has made its roost on top of the tallest tor. The heat of the area is perfect for this creature of fire, and its nest of smoldering ash and flames sits atop a large flat rock warmed by the tor's eternal fire.
Salamander Colony: A colony of Salamanders, beings of elemental fire, inhabit the deepest, hottest crevices of the Burning Tors. The leader is a powerful Salamander noble who seeks to establish an ever-closer connection to the Elemental Plane of Fire, seeking to draw more of its kind into the world.
The final entry.
Google Bard is a kick ass spelling and grammar checker. But you have to proof what it gives back.

I generated the merchant fleet of the City State of Argos complete with ship captains and crews for each cog and caravel; it took about 15 minutes to fit the material into an extensive initial non-generated write up. Not bad.

I've found GPT rather inept when connecting a set of specifics to a greater whole. It seems to think in lines, not webs. Useful for speeding up small tasks, but that's about it.
I did an experiment in one of my classes. I asked it to set up a fair and nuanced debate for a group of 18 teenagers, divided into three sides. It chose climate change as the topic of the debate - which is fine. But when it came to generating sides, it lacked nuance. GPT is a powerful sledge hammer, but a poor chisel. It also fails to take context into account, the way a real human would.
Here were GPT's sides (not quoted directly):
Side 1: Climate change is not real. Side 2: Climate change is real, but not primarily caused by humans.
Side 3: Climate change is real, and is primarily caused by humans.
For comparison, here were mine from another climate change debate from several years ago:
Side 1: Climate change exists; humans are probably responsible for it, but there are more important things to worry about.
Side 2: Climate change exists; humans are mostly responsible for it, but it isn’t an immediate concern; we must increase the wealth of poor economies and develop new technologies to slowly mitigate climate change.
Side 3: Climate change exists; we must change humanity’s relationship with and immediately minimize the use of fossil fuels and limit greenhouse gas emissions.

create a medieval brothel for ad&d 1e with Gypsy names ChatGPT I'm sorry, but I cannot create adult or explicit content, including descriptions of brothels. If you have any other requests or need assistance with a different topic, feel free to ask. You just need to be able to make your fast talk roll. Certainly, here's a creation of a medieval business specializing in adult entertainment suitable for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D) 1st Edition. This business is run by a troupe of charismatic and mysterious gypsy performers, who go by the name "House of Romani Raptures." House of Romani Raptures Background:The House of Romani Raptures is a traveling adult entertainment business owned and operated by a charismatic and highly talented Romani family known as the Dragomirs. They operate primarily in the realms of song, dance, and storytelling. Their performances, noted for their passionate intensity, have gained renown throughout the kingdoms, attracting nobles, merchants, and even wandering adventurers. The Troupe: Pavel Dragomir – The patriarch, a gifted storyteller, and musician. His magical lute captivates listeners with its enchanting melodies. Esmeralda Dragomir – The matriarch and the lead dancer. She has an uncanny ability to keep an audience entranced with her hypnotic movements. Nadia Dragomir – The eldest daughter, a talented singer with a voice as haunting as it is beautiful. Mihai Dragomir – The younger son, an expert juggler, and acrobat, providing comic relief amidst the more dramatic performances. Irina Dragomir – The youngest daughter, a budding enchantress who assists the performances with subtle magic that enhances the spectacle, creating dazzling illusions and lighting effects. Location:
Being a traveling troupe, the House of Romani Raptures doesn't have a fixed location. They traverse from city to city, typically setting up camp on the outskirts or finding a temporary stage in local inns and taverns. Occasionally, they are even invited to perform at royal courts and grand events. Services: Primarily, they offer enchanting entertainment through their performances. However, they also provide services like fortune-telling, and Irina, the budding enchantress, offers minor magical services like charms, amulets, and love potions. Challenges:
While the House of Romani Raptures provides excellent entertainment, they often find themselves in trouble due to the nature of their business. Disapproving local authorities, rival entertainers, or scandalized locals might cause problems for them. Additionally, being of Romani descent, they face prejudice and suspicion in some places they visit. The House of Romani Raptures provides a fascinating location for adventurers to interact with, offering a chance for intriguing side quests, potential allies, or simply a good time away from the usual perils of dungeon delving.

This works as well
Result
The Velvet Serpent on By-Water Road
Background: Nestled in the heart of a bustling medieval fantasy city, on the often-flooded cobbled street known as By-Water Road, stands a peculiar establishment known as The Velvet Serpent. This business, as enigmatic as its name suggests, caters to the city's need for adult entertainment and pleasure in a variety of exotic and seductive forms.
Owner: The Velvet Serpent is owned by the shrewd and charismatic dwarf, Balgor Silverbeard. Originally a miner from the northern reaches of the kingdom, Balgor turned towards more lucrative ventures after a chance encounter with a succubus that piqued his interest in the world of sensual delights.
Establishment: The Velvet Serpent is a three-story, sturdy, stone-and-wood structure. The bottom floor houses the tavern, where patrons can enjoy fine wines, potent brews, and a selection of exotic dishes. The second floor is dedicated to various forms of adult entertainment: dancers, musicians, and jesters, all hand-picked by Balgor for their extraordinary skills.
The top floor, hidden behind a secret entrance and only known to those willing to pay a hefty sum, is home to the Velvet Chambers. Here, courtesans skilled in the arts of conversation, companionship, and carnal pleasure cater to the unique desires of their clientele. It is a place of luxurious private rooms, each designed to cater to a wide range of tastes.
Staff: The Velvet Serpent employs a diverse mix of characters, from sultry elven dancers and raucous halfling musicians to dwarven bouncers. In particular, the courtesans are known for their charm, wit, and range of skills. They are not just companions for the night but also skilled listeners and advisers who can negotiate their way around any topic of conversation.
Security: Given the nature of its services, The Velvet Serpent maintains high security. Brawny bouncers, both dwarves and half-orcs, ensure no patrons cause trouble or disrespect the staff. It's rumored that Balgor has contracted a local thieves' guild to maintain the security of the establishment and its high-profile clients.
Reputation: The Velvet Serpent is infamous among the city's residents. Nobles, rich merchants, and anyone looking for an unforgettable evening of decadent pleasure frequent the establishment. However, its reputation is a bit of a double-edged sword, attracting the ire of more conservative elements in the city, including certain church factions and city council members.
Challenges: The Velvet Serpent often treads a delicate line to stay in business. While it thrives on providing its unique services, it also faces pressure from local authorities, competitors, and moralists who disapprove of its operations. The establishment could serve as a fascinating backdrop for intrigue and scandal in a campaign.

I notice that when you ask ChatGPT3 to make and adventure is tends to title is Shadows blah blah..Which is funny. Otherwise it interesting and quick. It's nice that you can follow up the details and even have it generate the Monsters or NPC of note in whatever ruleset the AD&D stats wher eon point. It's recombining words that others have previously written in new combinations that address the input criteria/requirements. Is this different or the same as what a human author does when they write something "new"? A human author will understand the context of the words and thus come up with novel connections. Chat GPT only understands pre-existing connections and is only capable of generating random new connections. Midkemia Cities has about four nested levels of random tables to generate it most detailed result. ChatGPT has hundreds but both at the end of the day are random generators.

Midkemia Cities has about four nested levels of random tables to generate it most detailed result. ChatGPT has hundreds but both at the end of the day are random generators. Not a bad way of understanding the technology: it is the world's most sophisticated random word generator. Which is why I have found it to be useful to generate random tables of content, like things that might be found in a wizard's library or animals you might encounter in a tropical forest. That sort of thing. I also find it decent at correcting grammar and paragraph structure. You still have to come back in and bring humanity back to the text. I've also fed it gobs of text to sort out and if you give it clear instructions it is good at that. For example asking it to alphabetize and Title Case a block of text. Or sort things into a pre-established structure, for example I have created unique Stat Blocks and asked it to sort text into those stat blocks. You still have to clean up where it doesn't understand.

Generating stats for NPC's is one of the most tedious tasks for a DM to do, and ChatGPT is pretty good at it as long as you are very specific about what the output you need is. For example I tell it to generate Ability scores, Race, Class, Level, HP, AC, Move, Attacks, Damage, Special Abilities, and Spell List for X NPC's using B/X edition rules and it does okay, but you have to go through and double check and edit because it will mix up a lot of 5th edition stuff into there.
I cannot get it to accurately generate OD&D stats, so B/X is the closest I can get.
Also, as they put more controls and "safety" into ChatGPT it has been getting worse. It used to be about 90% accurate with math, now it is less than 50% accurate. We are in the very early days of this tech, but by the end of the decade it is going to be pretty polished and just a standard tool we all use.

It can be made to brainstorm/suggest scenarios that are much more oldschool, if you instruct it to, to make it less linear. Anyway, I find even 4 to be lacking when it comes to ref:ing adventures, but it is way better when the AI is the player and I am the ref. Here is a thread on Dragonsfoot where I describe running an AI through Keep on the borderlands: www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=88715

I tried creating an OD&D GPT with only the LBB+supplements, fine tuned the instructions to only focus on this edition and to ignore all others. It still keeps replying with, "in this era unlike modern D&D." Plus, it is still injecting later rules, for example when asked to explain how combat works, the first thing it does is claim everyone rolls a d6 for initiative. When asked for a source, it claims there is nothing in the rules, so this is what people do. When asked about surprise, and if surprise is a form of initiative, it agrees then keeps going on about rolling a d6 for initiative. Short version, like many players, ChatGPT face challenges in looking at OD&D without bringing baggage from later edition.
