I was 14 when Lynch's Dune came out. Virginia Madsen as Princess Irulan really did it for me. I still love that opening.

I can't do audiobooks either. I tried laying back in bed and listening, but I fell asleep. I tried listening while driving but apparently I can only focus on the book or the road but not both simultaneously. Just doesn't work for me, which is a bummer because there are some that I have heard great things about, such as Zelazny's Amber. Maybe someday. I wasn't at all bored by the Dune movie, Audiobooks don't work for me, either... And I wasn't bored at all by the movie, either.

Saw Dune for a 2nd time tonight. Still awesome. Watched it with a friend who never read the book or saw the previous movies; he had a few questions but overall picked up the plot pretty quickly. He decided that he should have been born a Fremen, which is funny since previously he thought he should have been a gnome.

I listen to the soundtrack all the time. After watching the movie I can distinctly hear ornithopters, sand thumpers and drum sand that I didn't recognize before.

I polled my classes this week and most of the students have seen Dune already and universally praised it, I haven't heard anyone say they didn't like it.
Several of them saw it on HBO Max. I think Warner Bros. is losing tens of millions of dollars with this simultaneous release strategy.

I found that Amazon only sells the soundtrack in MP3 format, but Amazon UK sells it in CD. Hoping those are universal and play in my car. Yeah, seems like everyone likes it and complaints are pretty minor. Volume of music compared to speaking, in spots. Some places where characters might have been introduced more. That kind of thing.

CDs are not region locked like DVDs are, as long as you have a CD player that's in good working order you'll be fine.

I can't stop thinking about this movie. That scene where the Sardaukar are getting prepared for battle was incredibly powerful and haunting. I asked my kids if they want to go see it again this weekend and they said yes VERY enthusiastically. So we'll be going to watch it in Dolby Digital which apparently has the best sound.
I expected the visuals to be amazing, but what has really struck me is the emotional depth and raw storytelling power of the sound design and music.
It has been a long time since I wanted to watch a movie more than once, particularly to see it in the theater again. Maybe Braveheart was the last time? Oh, I saw Matrix twice because my co-workers went at lunch, and then my wife wanted to see it. But it's gotta be a truly amazing movie to get me out of the house to the theater twice.

Just saw the movie and loved it, visuals are awesome, casting awesome, sound in places was terrible as the dialogue was completely drowned out in places and in other places they spoke softly and either were mumbling or speaking another language that did not get translated on screen. So I would give it 5 stars for everything, but the sound in reference to spoken dialogue gets one star, although the sound other than that was excellent. I am going to re-read the book up to where the movie leaves off and then go see it again while it is still in the theaters.
The trial of pain would have benefited from the addition of 2 or 3 lines from the book. A few other spots would have been better if they had adhered more closely to the book, but overall well done on that score. Even where I could not hear what was being said, having read the book made it easy to bridge those gaps. They really should fix the sound or add captions in places to help out people who have never read the book.

Hmm...Maybe I was just grumpy when I saw it (three days ago), but I was not stunned. My favorite parts of this version: Paul's duel with Jamis, Duncan's last stand, Paul's training with Gurney, and all of the fight scenes (they finally seemed to do the fight scenes justice, in this version). Seeing the Freman boil out of the sand was very cool. The scene introducing Shadout Mapes, the Hunter-seeker scene. I was surprised at how much I took from the cut away to the Matador as a metaphor. I certainly appreciated the lack of voice over. The best acting by the cast (IMHO); Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Javier Bardem, and Charlotte Rampling.

Finally saw it, and I loved it. Best movie I've seen in a long time, and I can't get over how close they held to the book. My two not-serious nitpicks: the duel with Jamis should have been sans-stillsuit (nothing like a naked knife fight), and I was bitterly disappointed they didn't make Josh Brolin sing a song and play the baliset.

Finally saw Dune. At home. Never read the book.
I think I could probably pick out a Villeneuve flick, now, without being told. Grand visuals and, moreover, dull color. I like to see a Villeneuve flick. Just wouldn't want too many other films to try copying the style. Once in a while is enough.
Have to disagree with some posters about the sound. Inside the vacuum of a pair of noise cancelling headphones I heard every muttered line of dialogue no matter if the music was loud. I recommend trying a pair. I commented to the wife about how far movie sound has come. She couldn't hear me. She was also wearing headphones.
No experience with Dune other than trying to make it through the extended VHS playing during a childhood sleepover. It had the long explainer prologue and some pretty gross make-up effects. I wouldn't say that I liked it, but it was memorable enough that I don't feel I need any questions answered going into this one.
Sci-fi is often corny. The dialogue is corny. Even cornier, the grander the story is. Oscar Isaac and the screenwriters who wrote his scenes deserve much credit for giving Dune some weight. Jason Mamoa is less terrible in this film and that's really saying something. That meathead cannot act.
I wouldn't mind seeing the second part of Dune. Like I said somewhere else, with age comes patience for for sitting through movies with long run-times.
on a sidenote: Lawrence of Arabia predates Dune by a few years. The similarity is plain.
