Wow, I had no idea it was out yet. Hmm, the theatre is sounding mighty good. I will see it during the week, the last time I went during the week there were six people (including me and my friend) in the whole forty+ seat room. No spoilers now please. Just tell me that Paul doesn't... you know? <EDIT: Never post before breakfast (Dur!). I will now eagerly await the debut.> For once, the studio put the US at the end of the releases. Probably to build hype for the US/Can release. From what I read, it was a combination of that, not wanting international box office receipts to be hurt by streaming (since the date it becomes available on streaming services is based on the domestic release), and wanting to wait until two weeks after the new James Bond so they don't have to compete with it - both in general, and in particular for IMAX screening slots.

I've seen a couple promos. It looks like it will be pretty good. I'll not likely watch it in the theatre. Not for any particular reason other then I don't go to the theatres too often. It would have to be something that really grabs my interests, gets rave reviews, and is something my kids would want to see to get me into a movie theatre. Otherwise I'm usually just waiting until it comes out on DVD, Disney+, or Netflix. I don't know, Dune might hit all the bells to get me to go. We'll see.

A new final DUNE trailer dropped. I'm beginning to agree with those who are refusing to see it.

I'm Finnish so I already saw the movie a week ago.
It's probably the most faithful adaptation of a book I've ever seen in a blockbuster budget movie. The dialogue isn't straight from the novel, but the plot, characterizations, themes and tone of the movie all follow the book intensely closely.

The big-budget movie most faithful to the book that I have ever seen is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. If the Dune movie is as faithful as that, we are in for a real treat.

We are screwed then because they couldn't even get the title of the movie right with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US of A.

Though I have to admit Sorcerer's Stone rolls off the tongue a little better with the playful alliteration.

I've never even read the books, and only really care for the first two movies. I was just being my sarcastic self with the comment about the title issue with the original.Im completely unconcerned with Dune or anything else coming out of Hollyweird in the past 6 or 7 years.

Its some sort of ripoff parody. I wonder if they won't be sued by whoever owns the movie rites to Frank Herbert's stories?

Just like "Lord of the Rings" if you like to read, read the books before you see any movie made about them. Frank Herbert was an awesome author, his words will paint a world that no movie can ever recreate.

Thomden is just being cheeky. In any case, they've gotten legal action before and it'll happen again again, I'm sure. In the past they've gotten away with just changing the titles of their movies to less closely resemble the "real" film. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Asylum#Lawsuits_and_legal_issues

I have seen the movie. It more faithful to the books then even fellowship of the Ring. I'll probably go against the grain when I say that I don't think any of Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies are very faithful to the books. Sure, the film trilogy follows the plot of the novels fairly closely, but changes the tone and themes of the work to a considerable degree. This is pretty much the opposite of what Tolkien would have wanted. He received several movie script proposals in his later years, and made a lot of insightful comments that prove he was very savvy when it came to adaptations of his work. He was perfectly willing to go along with changes that would leave fans of the books aghast, as long as the script remained faithful to the overall themes of the novels. I don't think JRRT would have liked Jackson's film trilogy any more than Christopher Tolkien did. Villeneuve's Dune, however? Like I wrote above, the movie is astonishingly book-accurate for a production of this size. Does only half of the novel work as a fully satisfying, standalone feature film? I don't think it does, at least not completely, but I'll refrain from further comments until more people here have had a chance to see the movie. However, if it is fidelity to the book you value above all else, Villeneuve's Dune is a smashing success.

Not the same movie. Cheezy knockoff. What do you mean knockoff? And what is cheezy about it? It even has Sean Young in it who played Chani in Lynch's Dune. It only makes sense to recast her in the remake.

I have seen the movie. It more faithful to the books then even fellowship of the Ring. I have some friends who got to go to a screening last night. They were going gaga over it, apparently blown away by how accurate to the book, and how good it is. And that the dialogue, though changed quite a bit (I guess to avoid the thought voice-over narrations), was really well written. I'm waiting to see it on Imax.

A couple complaints from what I've seen in the trailers and elsewhere: I wish that they hadn't changed the word "jihad" to "crusade". I wish that a man played Kynes. That said, I am quite optimistic about the movie overall.

I wish that they hadn't changed the word "jihad" to "crusade". I wish that a man played Kynes. Kynes' gender isn't important to the story so I don't care about that. Changing jihad to crusade alters the particular flavor of the Fremen that Frank Herbert built into the story. That change is reflective of the general vilification of Christianity and hand-waving of the atrocities of that other religion that has been happening culturally in the West, and it is disappointing - even alarming - to say the least.

As to Keynes, the people who keep making these race/ethnicity and sex swaps of characters certainly think it's important, or they wouldn't keep doing it over and over again. I find it distasteful, because I'm apparently obliged by the social contract to insist it is a matter of no consequence while the people doing it believe otherwise.

Tix for Thursday, 7pm Pacific Time. Previews have me excited. That the director was grievanced to the SAG & DGA for quizzing various participants on the books has me excited. That people I've agreed with about movies in the past think it's very faithful to the books has me excited.
I plan on writing a <10 word review after...
