Hi everyone, I want to explore the world of swords and sorcery art. Unfortunately, I don't know where to begin. Besides Frank Frazetta (of course) who are some of the big names?

Margaret Brundage (1900-1976) was one. Here's her cover illustration for my second favorite Conan story, "Red Nails":

Virgil Finlay. Started in Weird Tales, worked in other pulps, did some paperback covers.

The Hildebrandt brothers did work on Star Wars and Clash of the Titans, but I liked their Tolkien calendar best of all

Are we including comic book artists? I really liked the black & white John Buscema/Alfredo Alcala collaborations for Savage Sword of Conan.

The Hildebrandt Bros were very influential on Keith Parkinson and Den Beauvais who took that look to the next level.

Interesting trivia, Buscema didn't like all that fancy inking on top of his drawing, but the fans loved it so much it became a mainstay. I mean look at all those delicious lines and details. Alcala on Buscema is unparalleled. This is why I have every issue of Savage Sword of Conan. We'll never get that quality of work in a series again.

You might like to take a look at some Warren magazine cover artists like Ken Kelly (Frazetta's nephew) or Heavy Metal magazine, like Richard Corben's "Den"(NSFW).

The mention of Warren artists reminds me--Esteban Maroto. He did some great sword-and-sorcery work on his Dax the Warrior series, plus good horror art for both Marvel and Warren.
Also, Jeff Jones for paperback covers.

The mention of Warren artists reminds me--Esteban Maroto. The inventor of the chainmail bikini!

Michael Whelan's art for the Barsoom books and Elric saga are superb. Do you have an example? He's got one good Elric illustration, but I haven't seen any good Barsoom ones.

Whelan's one good Elric painting. He's got a few more that are ok, but this is the best.

Angus McBride. Mostly known for his work on the various Osprey "Men at Arms" and related books, he also did a lot of art for MERP: Interesting contrast to the Hildebrandt version posted previously - I like McBride's version much better.

I don't know how to post images here. In the early days of the Intarwebz there was a FANTASTIC website some of you chaps may have known of called ImageNETion which was a massive, predominantly scifi and fantasy art gallery with thousands upon thousands of pages. From what I've seen lately, it is gone. However, I may have found a mirror in this. also: www.neodownloader.com/projects/92-fantasy-------------------------------------------------------------------- FELIX ORTIZ: www.artstation.com/felixortiz

Sanjulian is pretty amazing. The only thing is his figures tend to look a little more posed even more so than Boris.

How about Moebius for the science fantasy end of things?

Boris Vallejo and his wife, Julie Bell, were a cottage industry in the 90s. Boris also had a son, Dorian, who was a fantastic cover artist in his own right. I know for a fact that my interest in fantasy art comes from Boris. Very prolific.

Forgot Ken Kelly, who's done plenty of Conan covers, though he is most known, I think, for his work on Robert Adams' Horseclans books. Red Nails: Clan of the Cats:

What really launched Ken Kelly into super fame were the covers he did for KISS. I was never into the band, but these covers rocked.
