Well, Mr Miyagi did refuse to train Daniel in Karate Kid III... And, not coincidentally, the worst of all the Karate Kid movies. Except maybe that Jackie Chan one.

Sure, but that meme makes out like the "reluctant mentor" is this outlandish idea that only Johnson would use, when in fact it's such a common trope that it was used in the Karate Kid series itself.

Well, at least Mister Miyagi didn't try to murder Daniel in his bed because he had a bad dream about him. Karate Kid III has that in its favor.
Although, for my twisted sense of humor, that might have actually been worth the ticket.

The "reluctant mentor" thing was already done well--in The Empire Strikes Back.
Kylo Ren / Adam Driver and everything about him is my single least favorite thing about the Sequel Trilogy. He's its Jar Jar.

It's interesting how people really seems to hate The Phantom Menace. I can imagine that after years of waiting it might not be what everyone was waiting for, but doesn't that just happens with any franchise? I like 4, 5, 6 and 1, not exactly in this order. For years The Phantom Menace was my favorite movie, I don't know why. Qui-Gon Jinn is a very nice character and Darth Maul is an incredible awesome antagonist (IMO). But it was probably not because of that it was my favorite movie, since my favorite character is Count Dooku and I despise ep. 2 and 3, I don't consider it to be Star Wars at all . Still better than the last trilogy though. Nowadays I think that ep. 4 is my favorite. If I could choose what is Canon, it would be ep. 1, 4, 5, 6 and The Clone Wars animation.

The "reluctant mentor" thing was already done well--in The Empire Strikes Back. Once a trope has been done so well it is really hard to top it. I wouldn't have even tried. There are a million other tropes Ruin Johnson could have overlayed on Luke and gotten better results. The most important thing is not violating the core of the character. That wasn't Luke Skywalker on the screen. Kylo Ren / Adam Driver and everything about him is my single least favorite thing about the Sequel Trilogy. He's its Jar Jar. I tend to agree, even though Kylo was the only memorable or semi-interesting character in the whole lot.

It's interesting how people really seems to hate The Phantom Menace. I don't hate it. If you think about it Phantom Menace is the most memorable of the prequels: Pod racing, Darth Maul, Qui Gon Jin. Ewan McGregor was a fantastic young Obi-Wan. I don't care what anyone says, he was the best thing about the prequels.

@ampleframework you have a point. Ian Mcdiarmid always delivered, regardless of the terrible lines he had to read. And that one scene where he talked about the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise was one of the best in any of the Star Wars movies.

And that one scene where he talked about the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise was one of the best in any of the Star Wars movies. That scene was absolutely perfect. If I rewrote the entire trilogy I wouldn't change a thing about that opera scene. The Faustian temptation of the vulnerable acolyte set to haunting alien opera in the background. That's very Star Wars on the metaphysical level. It's the polar opposite of Luke learning from Yoda in his humble swamp dwelling.

My current ranking from 10 (best) to 0 (worst): 10: Star Wars 9: The Empire Strikes Back 8: Return of the Jedi 7: Rogue One 6: The Rise of Skywalker 5: The Force Awakens 4: Solo 3: The Last Jedi 2: Revenge of the Sith 1: Attack of the Clones 0: The Phantom Menace My rankings are pretty close to these, though I would place Rogue One lower and Solo higher. Rewatching Episodes 1-9 with the kids last year, and all in order for myself for the first time ever, reinforced my views. Original Trilogy > Sequel Trilogy >>>>> Prequel Trilogy. I just don't enjoy much of the Prequel Trilogy, while I find the Sequel Trilogy entertaining, with the chemistry between the leads much closer to the original trilogy, which goes a long way.

...I find the Sequel Trilogy entertaining, with the chemistry between the leads much closer to the original trilogy, which goes a long way. Yes. The chemistry amongst Rey, Finn, and Poe is the single best thing about the Sequel Trilogy. That's why The Rise of Skywalker is my favorite of the three movies, and my favorite part is on the desert planet.

They're all fine young actors who deserved better, same as Hayden and co. from the prequels. I feel this has been the biggest shortcoming for both the newer trilogies - wasted potential with capable talent.

Also, seems like you'd include The Clone Wars and Resistance. All of which I'd rank higher than The Last Jedi. But man, placing The Mandalorian last? That's harsh. I thought it was exactly the direction the Sequels should have gone.

I mean can you imagine having Cara Dune as the main character instead of Rey wanna-be-Skywalker? I don't dislike Daisley Ridley, but Gina Carano has about a thousand times more charisma. And she looks like she could seriously kick your ass (and probably could in real life!).

The Mandalorian is the only show I'm currently watching/waiting for to watch, along with The Expanse. It was a very good show for me and not a single episode disappointed me.
Since The Mandalorian was successful, it was just natural for a lot of other shows to start showing up, in this case The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rogue One spinoff, the Ahsoka series, "Rangers" (?), Lando, and who knows what more.
In one aspect, that's awesome, more Star Wars! On the other hand, every additional show increases my "fear" of they messing things up.

I'm very late to this thread, but I'll add in my rankings now, but I am only ranking those movies that I have seen*.
Empire Strikes Back Star Wars The Mandalorian (season 1) Rogue One Return of the Jedi Phantom Menace Attack of the Clones Revenge of the Sith The Force Awakens Clone Wars (animated series) Ewok Movies (both of them - and I don't recall the actual titles) The Star Wars Holiday Special The Last Jedi*
*I fell asleep halfway through this mess of a movie, although the only thing I really missed (no, I didn't 'miss' it) was the Throne Room Lightsaber Interpretive Dance Studio scene.
I really, really, really liked the characters introduced in TFA, including Kylo Ren, but I never understood the impetus to create the Rose Tico character in TLJ.
I like every single actor in the SW sequel movies, and I don't disparage their acting.
I disparage the writing and direction. Total Fail.
To me, that character serves the same purpose that Jar Jar Binks did.
Neither one of them were funny, only pandered to a small portion of fans, and their inclusion was a total distraction to the rest of the plot.
Leia slapping Dameron Poe and punishing him made absolutely no sense. Snoke dying made no sense. Dameron Poe "Edge-Lord" crank calling General Hux is a very, very cringe inducing scene. Comedy like this soars in movies like Pineapple Express, or Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, but this was jarring, and took me right out of the Star Wars universe as a "space opera" or "fairy tale in space".
Yes, I've heard a lot of excuses why the writing actually did make sense and/or was entertaining, etc., but I disagree.
This SW trilogy is nothing like Lucas' SW, even if he didn't do a stellar job on the prequels - at least I could see reasons behind the flimsy writing of where each prequel character needed to go in order to bring the saga up to speed with the original Star Wars (Episode IV "A New Hope" for you come-lately fans) and was infinitely more endurable than TLJ.
I have not seen RoS, nor the Clone Wars animated movie, but I have seen the first couple of seasons (of Clone Wars).
I like them, they are alright, but mostly on the side of 'meh' okay for me. They are entertaining at times, and there is good, solid writing there. My main problem with Clone Wars series is that I never accepted the characters at the values they are presented with.
I found it very hard to empathize with characters in this animation style, except established characters introduced in the prequel trilogy: Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Amidala, etc.

The Last Jedi* *I fell asleep halfway through this mess of a movie, It is the only Star Wars movie I've ever fallen asleep during. That slow motion chase sequence was sooo boring. I gave the movie a second chance, fell asleep in the middle. Got up and walked out.

On the other hand, every additional show increases my "fear" of they messing things up. SW has already been so messed up it doesn't matter anymore. The Mandalorian wasn't even all that great, though I enjoyed it quite a bit, it is just that in comparison to all the schlock that has come since RotJ, The Mandalorian being not-awful was good enough. The Luke scene at the end made it all worth it.

They shelved that one after they fired Cara's actress, unfortunately. I think it could be rebranded as an animation, though, or simply follow other Rangers.

But there was no source material to work from, no novels or comics or anything. They had to make it all up by the seat of their pants as they went along.

Kathleen Kennedy claimed there was no source material to work from to make Star Wars movies. You can imagine that didn't go over well with fans who have supported the Expanded Universe for over 40 years. Why we didn't get Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade and Thrawn, and a bunch of other great material from the EU is what's baffling.

How utterly tone-deaf and disrespectful of them to pretend there was "no source material" to draw from. Funny how that non-existent source material started trickling in piecemeal after a while, though. A little Thrawn here. A little Palpatine cloning here, etc.

Falconer's placement of Rogue One in his lists makes me sad. I think Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie outside of the Original Trilogy.
