Hello!
I go by Captain Ahash on forums. I live on the Oregon coast. I'm a perma-DM (part and parcel of living in a rural area)
I'm actually relatively new to D&D, at least by the standards of most of y'all. I've been interested in RPGs for as long as I was aware of them, but living in a rural area I just never had access or knew anyone who played. My first taste was when I got fed-up with not playing and downloaded Risus (a little couple-page beer-and-pretzel type game) and started running games for my friends in college. That was about 13 years ago. Since then I've ran a lot of games, mainly Risus and Savage Worlds, as well as some one-offs of Basic D&D here and there. Through that time though, I became fascinated with D&D, especially what is usually termed "Classic" D&D. I've also run many games (mostly OSR or OD&D) as part of my work as a residential counselor for adjudicated teenagers; using it as a form of group therapy and moral reasoning training.
I'm fascinated with the history and the depth of knowledge and conversation surrounding Classic/Advanced D&D. I love it from a historical, and almost sociological perspective; as well as the flavor and almost gonzo DIY aesthetic that those early books have. I love the art. I love the attitude and the freedom. My Rules Cyclopedia is one of my most prized possessions.
I love the game.
Even though I've actually played other games much more, old school D&D has a special place in my soul.
So here I am, happy to be on this forum and just soaking up as much information as I can!

Hello, I'm Azer, 20-some year D&D vet, mostly as DM, currently living just on the northern fringe of Toronto. I bounced off of the density of 3E pretty hard when I started out, but something about D&D caught my interest enough to dig into 1E/2E AD&D, which seemed so fascinating. Over time, I've become more and more interested in the older editions (especially their approach of having a fluid player group, since I've always had fixed groups since high school), and stumbling onto the OED house rules for OD&D looked like the ticket to figuring out how to bring that style to the table without needing as many chart look-ups.
Hoping to get such a game up and running soon, but otherwise always happy to discuss, debate, and learn

Thanks! No solid commits yet, but I've gotten a few tentative bites of interest, and I think those might be more fitting for fluid group anyway, if I can get enough (and current events being as they are, at least it's buying more time to set things up).

I'm Malcolm, been gaming since the 80s. I cut my teeth on AD&D 1st Ed: the Village of Hommlet before it was incorporated into the Temple of Elemental Evil. I think I only ever played Basic once, a foray into the Caves of Chaos. Coming from the UK, one of our group had a subscription to White Dwarf so most of our adventures were from there. I played a few of the official TSR adventures at university, but looking back now my D&D 'education' seems to be quite different to many/most people. For example, I don't think I ever played with a GM who played by Gary's maxim of keeping strict records of time. Torch burning time was never a thing, or rations or pretty much any of the resource management side of the game. There were one or two Henchmen over the years but hirelings were never a thing. Maybe because our playstyle (more likely GM style) somehow avoided the high levels of lethality; PCs rarely seemed to die, they were just replaced when we got bored! I haven't played any serious D&D for a long time. There was a brief flirtation with 3rd,but I can't get excited by 5E I'm afraid and that's the only game in town in these parts. But I have really started digging into older stuff (or at least clones) recently, and while I'm lucky to have a regular group who play all sorts of new fangled stuff, I've got a real hankering for some dungeon crawling or a wilderness hex crawl.

Hello everyone! I've been gaming since the early 2000s, picked up interest in OD&D via the Swords & Wizardry retroclone and the rest is history. I've seen this site recommended in many different circles as a forum regarding 'old-school D&D' and the roots of the hobby. I look forward to participating in your community!

Greetings all ! This board is amazing and I'm happy to be here. I've been researching and playing OD&D for about two years now, and I always felt that I was in the minority even in the OSR scene. It's so refreshing to find this place. And I feel small because a lot of the author that I read to understand the game (Delta, Grey Elf, etc.) are all here on the site.
Glad to be here.

Hello everyone. I played for a very long time in the fifth edition, but recently I learned that before that there were many editions. I wonder where it all started, so I'm here.

Greetings and salutations, fellow travellers, scoundrels and ne'erdowells.
I am Joshua, from Middle Tennessee, but around these parts I'll be going by "AmpleFramework", which is a reference I'm sure most of you will recognize.
My D&D journey goes back to 1994, where I was introduced to the basic rules of the game by a substitute teacher (using an AD&D supplement called First Quest). My young friends and siblings embarked on many a journey through wooded realm, subterranean labyrinth and across the seven seas to the deserts of Al-Qadim. In time, we grew older and found other interests, and when we checked back in on the state of the game a few years later, the d20 craze had begun and the bloated state of the rules had left us behind.
A few additional years down the line, I was a young man plugging away at my job and became nostalgic for days of yore, and went online to google around and see if anyone felt the same. This was the mid to late 2000's. I discovered that someone named Finarvyn had put out a rules set called Swords & Wizardry: Whitebox and that it emulated an even older, simpler version of the game I fell in love with as a kid.
That brought me into the OSR-sphere and eventually, in a round and about way, to here, 11 years later. I hear this is the best and most pure place on the 'net to discuss OD&D, which I discovered was my sweet spot for gaming. I have quite a bit of enthusiasm and opinions on the subject, which I intend to discuss in a civil manner. I hope you all will have me.

Welcome to the board, ampleframework! IMHO, this is the best place to congenially discuss OD&D, so I think you will enjoy it here.
I have a copy of First Quest around here somewhere. Haven't looked at it a while, but I like the colorful, miniatures-friendly poster maps that TSR was making during that era.

Seriously, this place was created because the fine folks at the Dragonsfoot boards weren't interested in opening a sub-forum there for OD&D and I was convinced that there was enough interest to make such a place run. (They have since changed their mind and have an OD&D sub-forum, and made me co-moderator, so irony abounds.) My plan then as now has always been to have a fun, polite corner of the internet where folks can discuss their thoughts and ideas about OD&D and share with one another. Based on what I've seen from your posts so far, I'm really glad you found this place.

Oh, yes. I also joined Dragonsfoot. I have some nice things to say about Classic D&D in general over there. I would call the starter sets from the early 90's that, although they were sort of their own thing. (There was a Black Box that re-imagined the Mentzer red box but the one we had in my hometown was blue and came with an audio cd. Not Holmes but something quite a bit newer.) I'm happy I joined these boards, too, because I see some familiar names who contributed to my enthusiasm for OD&D. Not just you but Greyharp, and a few others. Should be a good place for intelligent discussion with like-minded people.
Edit: Also, on the topic of First Quest, since Zenopus brought it up, one thing that always sticks out in my mind is that on the audio cd, there was an Ogre who sounded just like Macho Man Randy Savage. That was very amusing to ten year olds in the early nineties. I make it a point to bring that voice out of retirement every now and then. That ogre definitely exists in my OD&D game. He has his own lair and unique fighting style. I won't give many hits or fore-warnings about my campaign on here in case I run a play by post, but that one's free. Beware Bonesaw!

Hello everyone! I hail from Wayne, NE. Started playing D&D with Moldvay/Cook then went to AD&D. I have mostly been a DM. I do not enjoy being a player as much as I do DM'ing. I have now DM'ed every version of D&D. Also Castles & Crusades and Traveller. I love C&C because it is the best of Moldvay/Cook, AD&D, and the OGL. I ran a site called Cncplayer.net for a couple of years that was devoted to Castles & Crusades.
It was not until recently that my interest in OD&D got going with the incomparable SVE. I launched my first OD&D campaign in November 2019. Variably 4-8 players aged 14 through 50. Covid derailed what was turning out to be one of those memorable campaigns.
I am really enjoying this community so far.

Hi, all! Thanks for having me.
I'm an 80's/90's kid, who got my start playing an unholy blend of BECMI Rules Cyclopedia, 2e, and 1e. I drifted out of the hobby for 25 years or so, right around the time 3e came out, so I never bothered with any of the WotC branded stuff. I only got back into things recently after discovering the OSR and retro-clones. Since then, my preferred system has been B/X, but I'm here to expand my horizons.
Anyway, I joined up here because I'm about to run my very first game of OD&D this weekend. My regular group is getting a drop in. One of my players' cousins has apparently been desperate to try D&D for ages, so I decided to give the entire group a special treat, and run a session using just the 3 LBBs. They're going to party like it's 1975.
Anyway, looking forward to being a part of the boards!

Greetings! I am Parzival, and if you’re familiar with TMP, Dragonsfoot, or The Piazza, I’m Parzival there as well (and in a few other spots, too, though since that dang Spielberg movie came out, people keep using my name elsewhere! Accept no substitutes!). I started out with Holmes in 1980, and almost immediately jumped to AD&D as the first books were published. (I remember looking at the original MM with my buddies and wondering what all the extra stats were about...). Stuck with 1e for years, and then when 2e came out, I switched instead to BECMI and eventually the RC. For the last five summers I’ve run an “Introduction to D&D” program for teenagers at our local library (but COVID-19 kinda clobbered that this year). I pretty much have to use 5e there, but my heart belongs to the classic game. I recognize some of y’all from Dragonsfoot (can you tell I’m from Tennessee?), but I’m eager to meet the rest! EDIT: And yes, my avatar is upside down. No, I don’t know why.
