I am looking for a new and original monster manual compatible with OD&D and B/X. Like many folks my age I'm tired of Kobolds and Treants, and would like some unique monsters to populate my dungeons with. I'd be especially interested in monsters similar to aberrations like Aboleths and Beholders, but are obviously lower-level and not as fierce. Also, while PDFs are okay, I actually prefer hardcopy. I can't read PDFs well on a laptop (getting older by the day), and my daughter has absconded with my iPad Any ideas, or, barring those, dirty jokes? Thanks! Keith

Maybe a bit too powerful, but they tend to have lots of tentacles and mouths . A tiny 4 HD Suckered Abomination? Sounds like a carrion crawler to me. I'm not sure whether you're saying you have a monster manual or not, but the Grell ranks right up there on the things that scare the sanity out of me list.

Keith I am working on a monster manuel as part of my campaign; however, as with many things I am working on RL comes first. That said, you use a young Beholder that is not the full powered older adult and there are tons of resouces on line and off to steal er borrow from. BTW what is a treant? Do you mean ent?

I do have the 1E Monster Manual and Fiend Folio. I was hoping for something new(er). There have been lots of creative monsters in recent recent years, with the OSR and all. Basically I wasn't looking to modify original 0e or 1e monsters, but rather get a taste of new tentacles and slime.

BTW what is a treant? Do you mean ent? I do. While this could be considered evidence of early senility I actually wrote that on purpose. There's something clunky about all those falsely named Tolkien beasts. And an ent is what I want, not a treant., i.e. something original.

Excellent. That's very much what I'm looking for. I also ordered a used copy of the D&D Creature Catalogue, which has some unique critters in it.

You might want to consider my own Isle of the Unknown. It includes over 100 new and unique monsters, each illustrated in full color. Click the link in my sig for a review.

Some books I haven’t seen mentioned: All the Worlds’ Monsters, Vol. I - III (OD&D - Chaosium) Field Guide to Encounters, Vol. II (OD&D - Judges Guild) AC9 Creature Catalogue (BECMI - TSR) Tome of Horrors Complete (S&W - Frog God) Monstrosities (S&W - Frog God) Tome of Horrors 4 (S&W - Frog God) Realms of Crawling Chaos (LL - Goblinoid) And, if you’re not too much against AD&D… Monsters of Myth (OSRIC - First Edition Society) Malevolent and Benign (OSRIC - Expeditious Retreat Press) Hacklopedia of Beasts, Vol. I - VIII (Hackmaster 4th Ed. - Kenzer) Hacklopedia Field Manual (Hackmaster 4th Ed. - Kenzer) Monstrous Compendium, Vol. I - XXVI (AD&D 2nd Ed. - TSR) Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea (AS&SH - North Wind Adventures)

And, if you’re not too much against AD&D… Monsters of Myth (OSRIC - First Edition Society) Malevolent and Benign (OSRIC - Expeditious Retreat Press) Hacklopedia of Beasts, Vol. I - VIII (Hackmaster 4th Ed. - Kenzer) Hacklopedia Field Manual (Hackmaster 4th Ed. - Kenzer) Monstrous Compendium, Vol. I - XXVI (AD&D 2nd Ed. - TSR) Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea (AS&SH - North Wind Adventures) I really can't be against AD&D. That's where almost all of my cherished RPG memories are from. I personally prefer OD&D structure, but I was the exception, not the rule, among my friends. I downloaded Teratic Tome. It is very creative. I bought the AD&D Dungeons of Dread compilation that WoTC put out. While I owned these separately it's nice to have a nice new book, and I think I'll make liberal use of these critters and repopulate these classic dungeons. Thanks very much.
