Hi all, we are at the last days of this wonderful kickstarter: Primeval Thule kickstarterHopefully there is interest, even amongst the younger players, in a Sword & Sorcery setting! If this goes well, it will be my primary setting for 13th Age, and perhaps even for my old-school (A)D&D campaigns.

I'm excited about this, but I haven't joined up yet. (1) I like 13th Age, but it's just one RPG among many that I enjoy. When I play it, seems natural to use their default setting. (Kind of like playing Greyhawk using anything but AD&D.) (2) It seems very Conan/Cthulhu, but I can't decide why I need another campaign setting when I could just run a Conan game. Still undecided, so convince me.

Sounds like this will have lots of similarities to Carcosa.

Setting-wise, it sounds pretty cool! I'm reminded of Pellucidar, or even Marvel Comics' Ka-Zar.

Call me crazy, but I really don't understand how this is better (or different) than the excellent Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea.
I mean, it's almost literally the same setting. Okay, the Hyperborea in the game is floating in space somehow or another, but it was literally a northern island at the edges of the known world, just like Thule was.
Cthulhu and Howard? Ditto. The only real difference is that this is for Pathfinder/4e/13th Age

Call me crazy, but I really don't understand how this is better (or different) than the excellent Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea. Hard to answer without seeing the final product. It certainly doesn't seem that different from AS&SH -- as you noted it has a lot of the same inspiration by using Howard, Burroughs and Cthulhu. The overall setting may be quite similar. As far as "better", I suppose this will be subjective. I tend to like shorter settings where I don't have to know a lot but instead can follow some vague guidelines and "wing it" from there. AS&SH would seem to have the edge there. On the other hand, Primal Thule may have more extensive artwork and so on. I'm torn on this. I like 13th Age and want more material for it, but also like to support AS&SH.

It's OK to like both. I think there is plenty of room for individual creativity. I'm not a 4e fan, and I don't know what 13th Age is, but the setting sounds right up my alley, so I'm keeping an open mind about it.

13th Age is a mix of 3 and 4E with a bit of story gaming type stuff in there: Each PC has One Unique Thing which can change the game world (I am the only Halfling Paladin is an example) and They have relationship points with the 'icons' (think powers) of the setting. No grid combat - Near/Far/Close type thing. So maybe not many here's cup of tea! It is a beautiful book though and I love the way they have done the increasing power with massive amounts of damage (rolling 20d6s FTW!). Also the Escalation Die which increases the PCs rolls as the combat goes on.
However I like the look of the setting so I am in, same reason I supported AS&SoH from the begining - if I can afford interesting setting books (any RPG books TBH) I'll get them.

It says in the FAQ that they may do an “OSR” version at some point down the road. So I’ll wait to see if that materializes.

Yeah, I got the impression that if they didn't make their goal they wouldn't try another "low cost" kickstart. Maybe I got this from discussion at DF or somewhere like that, so it might not be official. Seems like they wanted a heck of a lot of startup cash compared to many other kickstarts out there.

There will be at least conversion notes for BRP Call of Cthulhu. Personally, the thrill is to have a S&S setting for 13th Age "out of the box." Although I like the 13th Age default sandbox setting, I prefer S&S. And while I like tinkering with settings and rules, I simply don't have enough time to devote to this particular aspect of the hobby. So anything that makes my life simpler, is absolutely welcome. Let's hope it makes the cut

What pains me is that I would have to spend something like $85 to get both print and PDF. Kind of pricey.

$40 for the PDF is kind of steep, too.

What pains me is that I would have to spend something like $85 to get both print and PDF. Kind of pricey. You get print book in one version of the rules, maps and GM screen, plus PDFs of ALL versions of the rules, Call of Cthulhu conversion document, plus player's guide pdf, plus all the pdfs of adventures. This is definitely the best deal For the $40 pledge; you get pdfs of ALL versions of the rules, the Call of Cthulhu conversion document, all the pdfs of all the adventures. Scroll down to Latest Thule News to see what's actually on offer (they changed things midway, so the contents on the right column are NOT updated!)

1. Great news about getting funded.
2. I had forgotten that kickstarters "can't change" after creation. Which is to say that they can change, but they can't edit what the levels say. I do need to look at the info again, as I was relying on the stuff on the sidebar instead of looking at the bottom of the kickstart.

They have setup a Slacker Backer page on their website, so you can still pledge to increase the total and get the books, and help reach the next level.
