I started a Google+ CHILL community. plus.google.com/communities/115176295146936013960Many old TSR guys developed this old game with Holloway art throughout. This clearly was MY favorite in this genre. I still play it, one-offs with my current group and a campaign on-going with my kids. I plan on posting plenty of old material and eventually some Actual Play recordings of our sessions. I discovered the google communities Gang Busters, Boot Hill and Top Secret from this forum, so I thought this would be a good place to CHILL.

You know I have complete or almost complete collections of the Pacesetters box sets and modules for "Star Ace" and "TimeMasters" (TimeMasters is now owned by Goblinoid Games) which all use the same mechanics, but I've never owned any of the "Chill" game... I'd be interested in joining the Community and exploring! Exalt!

Man, we played the HELL out of CHILL back in Jr. High. Good memories of darkened rooms and Cool Ranch Doritos... There was a supplement, mostly monsters, with some sort of powerful snake-like entity... What was that called?

Thanks for posting that sniderman. Good stuff. Were the groups that played made up of new/interested players or veterans of these games? Did they survive? For the Chill game, the entire group were fans of the old system. For Timemaster, it was a group of 6 newbies (all from the same home group!) who wanted to try something new. Both groups had a great time. The Chill team managed to put the Revenant down, but not without a few failed FEAR checks. The slaughter at the police station was pure horror-fueled chaos. (On the other side, I had the Revenant hurl her severed head at one Envoy, and he made his check with flying colors. He actually caught it, set it down, and began to lecture the confused ghost.) The Timemaster game was just as fun, with the PCs traveling to Wright-Patterson AFB in the late-70s. Since it was just after an attack on the U.S., there was a lot of paranoia of being cuaght and shot as spies. Then there was a jump to Skylab in orbit, so a zero-G firefight was also had. You're thinking of "Things," and that would be a "Deceiver".

Good stuff. Are you headed to Origins or Gencon this year? Also, have you ever played Star Ace, if so, what is the whole premise/setting of that game. Is it designed as a pulp style sci-fi or could you get gritty with it? I have never even held a copy. Deceiver

Good stuff. Are you headed to Origins or Gencon this year? I've been to Gencon for the last two years, but I'm bowing out this year. It's just gotten too expensive and there are plenty of great events in my own backyard -- Origins being one of them. Sadly, I signed up much to late to run anything, but I'll be roaming around as one of the players. A friend of mine had it, but we never played it, preferring Chill and TM. It's a bit more space opera/pulp than hard-and-fast sci fi grit. Here's a good overview of the setting: Star Ace Review on RPG.netOh, and if you're curious as to what Chill THIRD edition would have looked like, the company that was working on it back in 2007 (Otherword Creations) released a set of Quick Start rules to the Internet community to drum up interest. However the company failed to fund it and the company disappeared before it got any further. But the ruleset is a very interesting look at what might have been: Chill Third Edition - Quick Start Rules

That was it! The main villain in one campaign... That's a tough creature. I never faced one but the IPs(EXPs)are large and you multiply it with each discipline it has. Taking this down would be like slaying a dragon. Sniderman is in my own back yard. I'll be wandering at Origins as well. I missed Gencon last year but I want to go this year. I haven't signed up for anything yet.

Actually, maybe even more campy than Star Frontiers.

Is that how it(Star Ace) comes off, or are their mechanics to support that(Campy/pulp feel). The reason I put it that way, I read a review of CHILL from a person who has never played it and they described it that way. Compared it to Campy Horror films like "Hammer Films". Do people get that impression because of the Holloway Artwork(my guess) or is it mechanical or is it compared to cultists sacrificing babies to the Old Ones?

...and don't forget Vulcan people. Anyone ever tried to mix the two? That might be fun... Mix the two? Do you mean SF and SA? I was working on creating conversions of SA races to SF then completely lost interest. Well, actually, now that I remember it. Larry Moore and I started working together on a more expansive Savage Worlds conversion of SF based originally on Greg Bruni's work, and I was just going to Savage the StarAce as well... then I lost interest. About that time, we started talking about a rules-light system that would fit into a box the size of a deck of cards... the genesis of BareBones Fantasy. He's gone a long way with that since then and I'm very impressed with his results. ...so all that to say, "yeah, well no, but yeah."

Picked up some Star Ace, should be here soon. Anyone ever play Alternity? I got the Star Drive books and beginners Box set for cheap locally. It came out in 98' by TSR but was dumped in 2000 when d20 came out. A quick glance seems like an easy system to learn, no 10 sided dice though - weird.

Never played Alternity, I bought a "like new" boxed set. I guess a "starter set" since none of the books were complete. (Much like the D&D set of the same ilk about that time). I never played it. Read the books and thought it sounded interesting. Yeah, initially, since this one came with some horrible cheap yellow dice, I thought the d10 was missing until I read the rule books. I'm guessing that was the way to stay original. lol. Somebody's done conversions of the SF, Traveller, and Alternity races for X-plorers.

Got my Star Ace. Love it. Right up my alley. "Star Teams", or your party of adventurers, are pitted against the Imperial Empire who is taking control of planetary systems. Described as, "Robin Hood" Rebel Resistance fighters, your job is to infiltrate Imperial bases/ships, steal and sabotage. I love the Star Wars similarities without it being Star Wars. The Races are nice. No bugs, bats, or blobs.

Welcome. I have most of the Mayfair material but the majority of my CHILL gaming was from the Pacesetter years. Looking through the 2nd edition, some of it is a direct reprint and books like the two you have added some pieces here and there. All the same game. The artwork changed and they gave you the option to not belong to SAVE, the organization that sends the PCs on missions. I like the Horror Genre but never played CoC, so I'm digging this stuff back up, grab a shovel.
