or, So Close I Could Taste It. Lying in bed last night reading Playing at the World, which I finally picked up from Amazon. Show my wife a pic of the OD&D box and mention they're re-releasing it in the fall (hint, hint). She has patiently put up with my gaming for over 25 years but won't play. She just doesn't get it - the whole how do you win thing, mostly. After seeing the picture, she says "I think I had that back when I was a kid." Um, what? "Yeah, I'd take it out and look through the books and could never figure out why there was no board or pieces, and put it back again. I think we finally sold it at a garage sale." Really, a white box? She thinks it was late 70's, so we go back and forth trying to narrow down the time frame, cause it could be Moldvay, or maybe Holmes, I think. Big blue book with a dragon? Nope, she's pretty sure it was that one in the pic, it was a small box, like Password was. Sigh. In 25 years, with me gaming the whole time she has NEVER mentioned she had a D&D set when she was a kid. It must have been gone by college, because we've been together since then, and I'm sure she (or her parents) would have given it to me, or I'd have seen it on their bookshelf with all the other games. I had no idea what OD&D was back then, but I'd certainly have seen that old version and been intrigued. Such is life...

ISTR a glut of white box edition OD&D on the market in the late 1970's ... at least here in Texas. I recall picking up an extra copy at a mall in San Antonio, figuring TSR was getting rid of its inventory (pure conjecture, I know).

"How do you win?" ROTFL It has always baffled me why the womenfolk can't comprehend RPGs. It is all about storytelling and chattering with one's friends, so you'd think they'd like it. *puzzled face* Then again, Chess has a definite objective of winning, but they don't like that either. *shrug* I think it all boils down to the martial origins of those games. Perhaps it needs a new marketing campaign to target the distaff demo: Fifty Shades of Greyhawk: The Role-Playing Game.

You just made me openly weep No but seriously I've gotten a few girls to play RPG's, and you're absolutely right, they love it. You just have to explain that its "chattering with one's friends" and they jump right in.

The first time EVER, in 1972, I played "Greyhawk" with Gary Gygax, there was a woman playing.
Every game I've ever been in ever since has had at least one women, usually almost 50%.
It's not that women don't like RPGs, it's just that women don't like YOU.

I'm enjoying these quips. ;D My wife doesn't "get" RPG's, but she will happily play eurogames and even the occasional wargame - so I still consider myself lucky.
