...if you'll excuse the bowdlerized Mae Westism.
I realized today that I've been posting in a sub-forum called "Men and Magic" for some time without having read Men and Magic. What's a person supposed to do about this? My understanding is that hard copies of OD&D are prohibitively expensive (and prohibitively inconvenient) to come by. What do you recommend?

There is the WotC reprint for $150(US) for sale in November (edit: ~ $104.00 on Amazon). IMO that is a reasonable price, though it is definitely more "stuff" than you're asking to boy.
I would keep an eye on eBay. With a bit of patience you can score some books in good condition if the concerns of the collectors (a box in good condition, the ready ref sheets, early printings, etc.) aren't a big deal for you.
If lack of legality isn't a stumbling block for you, you can always find grey market PDFs floating around.
(edit for spelling)

If November is too far off, or the price tag is too high... I'll be offering some genuine hard copies as prizes in an adventure writing contest (for Delving Deeper) shortly.
You could try your hand at that?

Wait a few months and I bet WOTC will make PDFs available again.

Probably gronan is right, but if you're patient and diligent you can find good deals on vintage copies on eBay. I found a 5th print of the three LBBS (hobbits, ents, etc) for $100. This didn't include a box, but the books themselves were in great shape.

Also look on Amazon. Sometimes booksellers have od&d books for less than they are worth, I think due to lack of knowledge. Also look for individual books on Ebay.
