Hey everybody. I posted a little homebrew game a while back, called Gax, that a few of you seemed to enjoy. Then my site went down and I fell off the face of the internet. Whaddya gonna do? I figured it was time to repost the game, and throw up its sequel.
What is GAX?
Gax is a simple, old-school fantasy game written and illustrated by me, with some rules additions submitted by the OD&D discussion community. It plays fast, loose and lethal - using big bunches of six sided dice. Here's some features:
And, hey, I'm giving it away for free! So go ahead -
So, here's the real exciting thing. After finishing GAX, I wrote and illustrated a more elaborate science fiction game as a sort of semi-sequel. It's called VOX. Mechanically, it's totally distinct from GAX, and includes a large selection of races and classes, and page after page of weirdo sci-fi equipment. My approach to this game was basically to throw all the mainstream sci-fi junk I could think of into the pot and simmer to taste - much like D&D features a free commingling of various fantasy elements. In VOX, you can have Boba Fett, Gallagher Galloway and Jedi Mr. Spock team up to fight not-klingons in abandoned martian aqueducts. And all in about 30 lavishly illustrated pages! Give it a try!
DOWNLOAD VOX!
I'm still in graduate school, so I'm going to check in on this thread as often as I can to address comments / rules suggestions / whatever. If you like the games, pass them on! I'd love to see these things getting reviewed in the old school blogosphere.
If you really like the games, tell me how your characters get killed. I live for that stuff.
Happy playing!

- Vignette play allows you to play a campaign "out of order," skipping back and forth from the height of a character's power to their humble beginnings.
- Uses only six-sided dice, if you're into that kind of thing.
- All monsters are randomly generated - producing totally weird things like "slime elephants."
- Bizarre random magic system basically always screws the player.
