Vangelis will step out from behind the archway to intercede between the nearest retreating member and his foe, attacking with his mace.

Meanwhile...
Almost a week ago, The Herald had the great misfortune to be on a regular outrider patrol when it was ambushed by lizardmen. Since then, he and the other captured outriders have been kept captive in miserable, dark, wet, muddy pits below the lizardman kitchen. Each day one or two of his fellows have been pulled up from the pits to be eaten. It has been a harrowing experience and he has developed a keen hatred of the lizard types.
By his rudimentary understanding of the kobold tongue, The Herald has learned from the chatter of the reptile underlings that the supreme leader of this tribe (revered in an almost god-like fashion) is a figure known as "Mother". She always seems to be hungry, and has no doubt eaten half of the captured outriders herself.
Right now, The Herald is alone in his muddy pit (though there are other pits nearby). His prayers must have been answered, for all of a sudden he hears a great commotion and the sounds of fighting...
The Herald has none of his gear, and is cold, muddy and half-starved in a 10ft deep mud pit. It is open, but impossible to clamber out due to the slick, muddy walls.
Your adventure begins now!

[ooc] I mean he wants to save his skin, but look cool doing it. [/ooc] If in immediate danger he will attack defensively, otherwise, retreat with as much stealth as possible. Jaras is in melee combat with a furious, 7ft tall lizardman. Danger doesn't get much more "immediate" than that!

From the depths of his muddy prison, The Herald never lost faith. He knew that the Gods were testing his strength of will, and he remained patient and vigilant. His time is now!
The cleric will shout at the top of his lungs, hoping his rescuers will hear him.
"Friends of Man! Lower me a rope and let me help you slay these foes!"

No particular instructions are forthcoming from Mot or Gaspard but melee combat is fast and furious and waits for no man...

Despite the majority of the reptiles succumbing to Ædelwynn's sorcery, the remaining pair press their attack, and Jaras is left exposed against two enemies twice his height. The halfling (wisely) chooses to take evasive action as Vangelis shoulders through his fellows to boldy enter the melee and immediately cracks the twice wounded lizardman's skull open with his mace. Tirandir too joins in the melee but his efforts are futile for Malaveque ensorcels the last reptile before any further harm is done.
Suddenly there is quiet but for the fitful snorts and hisses of the sleeping reptiles, and a hailing voice requesting aid from the dark.
The referee rolls a morale check for the lizardmen seeing that three quarters of them apparently just dropped dead [2d6=10] but the lizards are too stupid to realise they are in trouble, and continue their attack.
Tirandir will join last, as he has to stow his bow, draw his shortsword, and then charge into combat. Jaras is fighting defensively (meaning the enemy will be -4 to hit him) so won't attack. Initiative is otherwise rolled [1d6; Vangelis=4, Lizards=1].
Jaras keeps them busy with his dodging and weaving until Vangelis joins the fray, and attacks [1d20=14] and hits [1d6=3] and smashes the skull of the twice wounded lizard.
The other lizard man then attacks [1-3=jaras, 4-6=vangelis; 1d6=4] Vangelis [1d20=4] but misses. Tirandir appears at the last moment and attacks [1d20=5] but also misses.
Malaveque reads his scroll of charm person against the remaining lizard, and it takes a saving throw [1d20=5] and fails; it comes completely under Maleveque's influence.
That about cover it.

Tirandir would draw back once he sees the Lizardman's eyes going "swirly". After a few heartbeats he would glance back at Malaveque, smile, then gesturing as if shoo'ing him and the lizardman off, with a extra head nod towards the sleepers and the old "line across the throat".
Once things seem under control Tirandir would inspect the dead Lizardmen, testing his shortsword against it's throat and pushing the blade through the eyesocket. With this first hand knowledge he would move off towards the sleepers. The Kobold would be the first killed because it is relatively simple. The Lizardmen would be next and if the throats seems too tough he would use his shortsword to pierce the brian through the eye socket. Dirty work but better safe then sorry at this point.

Ædelwynn steps from cover, all smiles and smugness once again. He saunters across to the sleeping lizard folk and sets about assisting Tirandir in ensuring they never wake up again. He is humming quietly to himself, inspecting the increasing number of lizard man corpses and quietly muttering something about "boots" under his breath...
"Does someone want to see about that noisy fellow yonder before his cries awaken our playmates here?" he remarks quietly to no-one in particular...

Vangelis will try to find the source of the sound, and proceed with caution into the darkness, lighting a torch as necessary.
"Ho there! Keep talking! Who are you, and where are you from?"

With the lizardmen defeated the remaining kobolds squeal and flee in all directions into the darkness. It seems futile to pursue them into the darkness with the head start they already have, so they are let go... for now.
Malaveque's new best friend, a hulking crocodile-brute stands staring at his enchanter quizzically as his former enemies move by him without regard. Tirandir sets about inspecting the two dead lizardmen guards outside the room. He tests pressing his sword point through the eyes and throats. It's nasty work, but he seems indifferent to it and either method would be a perfectly viable approach to slaying the sleeping reptiles...
Meanwhile the others locate a human prisoner in the muddy pit by the great smoldering cauldron. The muddy fellow looks up hopefully as our heroes peer down at him. He might even have a familiar look about him, but it's hard to really see him through all the mud.
There is an evil smell arising from the cook pot, and a few suspiciously man-shaped cuts of meat bobbing about. That is a Man's thigh, surely? There are a lot of stinking guts and bones littering the camp site also... it is a sickly mess.

Jaras seeks refuge, rest, rations, and healing. He prefers that as far away from that pot as is safe.
I.e. He doesn't stray from the party.
His bow is out, laying loosely notched facing an approaching opening. (OOC: I'm not visualizing the layout well at present)

"I am The Herald of Man! I speak the words of the gods and all beastmen tremble. Tho' they slaughtered my companions, I still live to seek revenge. Surely, the gods have smiled upon me to have granted such a rescue. Mayhap one of you could toss down a rope? I need to find my gear. Solais calls out for beastman blood and she's lonely when not in my grasp."
The man pauses for a second, then looks up again.
"You might could check the other pits as well. There were several outriders captured with me. They might not all be dead."

Malaveque smiles warmly at the lizardman, and encourages him to point out other living men in pits and which direction others of his kind may be found. In what tongue does Malaveque attempt to communicate with the Lizardman? p.s. I not on your character sheet you say: But in fact, Malaveque knows a total of 7 languages.

Hmm. Start with common, since the kobold seemed to have a little. I don't think I chose my languages, not having a list, but as an elf with high intelligence it seems from the rules that I'd have plenty to try (I'm happy if they are assigned randomly at this point). If not, then I'd be reduced to what could be communicated through sign language.

Missed your ps. I thought I had some for being an elf plus others for IQ. Common, then Chaotic, I guess, and try down the list from there.

Oket, let's assume then that Malaveque knows (1) Elvish, (2) Chaotic, (3) Common, (4) Gnoll, (5) Hobgoblin, (6) Orc, and (7) Kobold.
Ref rolls to determine with the lizardman knows common [1d10=4; so he does not]. However, kobold and lizard man must be closely related tongues, so Maleveque is able to communicate in that reptilian way.
The enchanted lizardman has an intelligence similar to a domestic cat. It moves protectively between Maleveque and his fellows, and scowls threateningly at anyone who gets too near, or even looks at him.
It doesn't seem to understand the concept of numbers or counting, or even of captives. However, with a little searching it quickly becomes apparent that there are three "larder" pits, but only one of them yet contains any captive. Apparently, everyone else has been eaten already.
As far as directions, the lizard is able to grunt "Mother, Mother..." and point toward the dark, far end of the chamber.

"Ah, Brethren," Malaveque obsequiously purrs, "the brood mother is likely at the far end of the chamber. Look lively, then!".
Malaveque then enquires of his erstwhile lizard friend whether the lizard folk have any coin (using an example) or bright shinies for trade.

Gaspard gains rope from Jaras the halfling and lowers it down to The Herald, who is the able to clamber awkwardly from the muddy pit.
Once atop he spies a motley crew of the Gray Heart's most misfit men (and others), no doubt sent to rescue him and his fellows. But what's this? Their seems to be a foul reptile in league with them!
Meanwhile, Tirandir stabs each of the sleeping lizardmen through the eye with his short sword, slaying them abruptly. The enchanted lizardman is not unaware of this murder, being in the immediate vicinity of it, and rolls an additional saving throw [1d20=14] but is unperturbed. It never much like the other lizards anyway; a hint of a cruel smile twists its awful mouth.
Jaras takes what comfort he can find in this grim place, sitting himself down upon a stone to rummage through his meager supplies and drain his waterskin.
What now gentlemen?

(OOC: I'm not visualizing the layout well at present) That is kind of appropriate in the underdark... The company is in a long wide chamber that must have once been a great plaza but now it is a sunken, filthy ruin. An impressive series of decorative stone arches run all around the walls. The only actual opening you know of are the two arches you entered by which are roughly in the center of one of the long walls -- some 80ft or so from the lizard camp. The lizardcamp, cookpot and pits was at the far back-left corner of the chamber (as you entered). The opposite end of the chamber is unexplored.

Malaveque then enquires of his erstwhile lizard friend whether the lizard folk have any coin (using an example) or bright shinies for trade. The lizardman hisses a reply that Mother has many like the coin Malaveque shows. He suggests that Malaveque should give his coins to Mother.
