Trying out d6 instead of d20 for the first time - do I have this right or have I missed something?

That's how I read it, yeah. Except I'd change it to (applies against normal men or similar only), so it would include Kobolds, Orcs, etc. All the 1 hit die humanoid monsters.
Others have different opinions, however, and you'll likely hear from them soon enough.

I agrees with coffee, though the ogre is troublesome...who the hecuba wants to roll that many dice? Personally, I'd either use the combat matrix for anything above 1hd. Or, if you want to really go old school, you could use the Fantastic Combat table...

Sorry, missed the Ogre.
If you're using a D&D Ogre, they have 4+1 hit dice, so they'd attack four times with a +1 on one of them (2d6, 2d6, 2d6, 2d6+1).

...who the hecuba wants to roll that many dice? I've heard that comment before, and it always comes from DM-types. All the player-types I know (including myself) are more like "You mean I get four attacks? Sweet!"

You can also give the Ogre one attack dealing 4d6+1 damage, the math works out the same in the long run I think...
Personally I don't use man-to-man for 1HD orcs and the like, only for "boss" battles. I use mass/troop combat for 1HD or less and don't even give them individual hit points (1 hit = 1 kill, just like Chainmail).
