That banner ad has got to go. There's nothing more jarring than being up late at night, kids in bed, enjoying the very few hours I have to pass in peace and quiet... and then that shouts at me from my computer when I visit the OD&D message board.
I'm all for this website making a buck, but seriously: kill that ad. Can I get a 'Hell Yeah!!??!"

You use firefox, right? Just install Adblock Pro and you won't see it.

I hate the adds too, especially the big ones that "grow" out of their banner to fill the screen space. However, the proboards adds are what enables us (and all proboard users) to use their service at all. In fact, as discussed over here paragonunleashed.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=663 , installing add or script blockers is against the proboard service agreement, and they say if you do so they will restrict or deny access. The thing is, there is the perfectly legal "Click Here to Make This Board Ad-Free" link at the bottom of every page, which would solve the add problem, and also keep proboards (and hence this forum) financial. It is a pay month by month thing, which all members can contribute to the cost of. I would be happy to contribute a few dollars here and there to keep this board add free, but it really only works if folks keep contributing month by month. Hence it would almost require someone to coordinate payments to keep it as economical as possible for all. Otherwise we would end up overpaying.

thegreyelf is right, install Firefox and then install the Adblock Plus plugin and the banner ads will be bye-bye. The other option is: there is a “ Click Here To Make This Board Ad-Free” link at the bottom of each page. Click there and donate $7 every month and the board will be ad-free (for everyone)! (Although people running Firefox won’t notice the difference!)

It's not the ads I mind, it's just that one ad. It's the only one with an audio component...

I was reading some of the stuff on the ad-free option and in general it seems good but I didn't see any sort of "autopay" feature.
It costs $7 per month. It seems to end at the end of each month and you have to re-pay. If you pay halfway through the month, you only get half of a month for your money. No carry-over.
What would be nice is to have an account where we could put money and each month it would just automatically deduct. Not sure if this is an option. I'll have to look around again.

Yeah, I hate waking up the whole house with a suddenly blaring speaker too. I'll have to try out that AdBlock thingy. Do people still even use IE? Weird...

It's not the ads I mind, it's just that one ad. It's the only one with an audio component... Okay, now I get it. I've only fallen victim to that one once. Now I browse with my audio turned off (which helps on other sites, as well). But on the whole, I don't have a problem with ads. Actually, I find it amusing sometimes how far they have to stretch to make the ads seem relevant -- there are ads based on keywords that advertise the exact opposite of what's being discussed.

Might I suggest adjusting the volume on your computer speakers when looking at these boards?

Might I suggest adjusting the volume on your computer speakers when looking at these boards? I don't know, might you? I think you might have Micro-managing my audio settings is a clumsy solution, but I am aware that my laptop has a volume control. Also, spending $84/year isn't appealing, although I appreciate the option. And yes, I know that using IE is the online equivalent of strutting through the tough part of town at 2am in heels and a mini-skirt... I guess call me old-fashioned. Really, I just wanted to rant about that one terrible ad. It appears misplaced on this site, as pensioners in their dotage seem the only demographic likely to fall for that tactic and click-through. Glen Beck's website, or the bottom of a Nigerian finance minister's emailed plea might be a more profitable home for it.
