I currently want to create some new classes for OD&D. Particularly a psionisist class.
I also want to re-work the thief, so as to make him fit in a "pre-supplement I" context.
How would one creature a nice, roughtly balanced class?
Any method detailed somewhere?

Psionics are a whole other thing. No good advice on that one.
As far as other classes go, ODnD doesn't really need them. I like to think of "class variants" instead of new classes. ** Want to run a "swashbuckler" character? Run a Fighting man, only don't wear armor and get a DEX bonus for AC instead. ** An "archer"? Give a +2 to bow use but a -2 to all other weapon use. ** A variant spellcaster? Simply use the Magic-user but write a new spell list. ** A Paladin could be a multi-class Fighting Man with Cleric. Gets healing magic but is a better fighter than a regular Cleric.
You don't really need new classes, just adjust the old ones. Just my opinion.

Well, I certainly don't want to create 23+ new classes. And I agree with your "class variant" approach in most cases. Right now, I just need 2 more and I think I'll just stop there . The Thief , and the Psion. The only additions I really want/need for my game. I just want those two done as right as possible.
