I loved risk from the first time I played it. It is one of the games that I consistently play and is probably in my top ten of favorites. I found a place you can play online for free here. I would love to see some of the forum members I talk D&D with over there. I have the same user name as I do here so I am easy to find.

I remember as a lad I had a bunch of friends overnight for my birthday. The plan was to watch videos and play boardgames all night. So, we played Risk. I went last, and was wiped out by my friends in the first round, before I even had a chance to take my turn. I spent a good portion of my birthday that night watching my friends play Risk. Despite that, I still like the game, particularly some of the variants they've come up with.

I play on a similar site, www.conquerclub.comI find it works better with the variant where everyone has another player as their target, and once someone is eliminated whoever had them as their target wins. It stops the long, boring endgame, and also stops people being wiped out just because everyone attacked them.

Despite that, I still like the game, particularly some of the variants they've come up with. Ten years ago or so, I created a house rule for our RISK games that prevents this from happening. It goes like this: At the start of play you randomly draw 3 cards, cards that represent the countries you already control. You select one of these three countries and place 10 extra armies (a single ten piece) on it. This ten piece cannot be used to attack until you have had three complete turns, but it can defend. However, if someone else attacks your ten piece, and breaks it up, you may then use what remains. This house rule effectively gives anyone a chance to survive at least 2 or 3 rounds. In the years since we have implemented it, I've only seen someone get taken out on round one maybe once. I have a whole bunch of RISK house rules and variations I've developed over the years. Maybe someday I'll organize them and make a pitch to Parker Brothers, but I'm pretty sure they do everything in-house.

A couple of weeks ago my daughter had two friends over for a game night, which will happen again this weekend and will be a regular thing now, I think. We played Risk 2210AD for 6 hours, finally getting a winner at about 3 AM. Me and 3 10 year olds. At least I didn't get taken out first!
We talked about playing other games, too, and I plan on getting them playing Swords and Wizardry WhiteBox eventually. In the meantime, I'll warm them up with HeroQuest - the 90s dungeon crawl boardgame from Milton Bradley & Games Workshop. With some tweaks I can make it very much a D&D lite (rather than Warhammer Fantasy lite), with some basic roleplaying and character development to get them used to the idea.

I have a love/hate relationship with Risk. I love amassing huge armies and marching them across the globe. I love taking the “risk” and trying to wipe out a player so I can get his cards and cash in so I can keep on rolling. I love the intrigue of trying to get the other players to attack each other and not me. On the other hand, I hate it because I feel that luck is too big of a factor. Whether it’s a bad streak of dice-rolling or not getting the card you need to complete a set. Too often you lose not because of poor strategy but just because of luck, and that leaves one really sore.
I have mostly replaced Risk with Mare Nostrum.

I love Risk! I alternate between a rpg group and a board game crew.
We even made a custom Risk board based on the map in Jack Kirby's Kamandi comic from the 70's.
Another favourite of my group is the game Dust, it falls somewhere between Risk and Axis and Allies.
I really want to check out Risk 2210AD, it sounds awesome.
