As an avid, some would say obsessive, fan of C.S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian, Alexander Kent and their ilk, this has - from its first appearance on the shelves - been my favorite RPG! Anyone else ever play this unknown gem?

I used to own this! Never could get someone to play it though. That was during my Bolitho years

Unfortunately I was only able to interest one group in playing. The campaign was set during the American Revolution with the p.c.s as officers aboard a British 44 gun two decker. They enjoyed it for about a dozen sessions, then a young lady joined our group and we went back to D&D... I still wish I could find players for it, though!

Was this the RPG published by FGU with a combat system that was based on GDW's En Garde's fencing system or am I thinking of something else?

My brother owned it; I was interested, but he could never get anyone else to try it.
On the other hand, we were both huge fans of FGU's Flashing Blades. (He re-reads Dumas' The Three Musketeers nearly every year.)

You can still order Privateers and Gentlemen from Fantasy Games Unlimited, along with some other greats. I might try to run this at a Con since there are not people around here that play P&G. Also, people are willing to try something different at a Con. I know that I am. Of course, I would like first to play in a game.

I'm not positive but I think back long ago we borrowed some rules from this to play with our pirate game which was a combination of Pirates and Plunder and another pirate game I can't remember the name of right now
edit:: Skull and Crossbones was the name of the other game we used
