Hi everyone! I just ran Swords & Wizardry for the first time and I've come up with a number of questions out of that initial play session. Out of respect for high level of quality and politeness of this awesome forum, I have two questions: 1) In light of the fact that the S&W Whitebox rules are a retro clone of OD&D, can I post rules-oriented questions in the OD&D forum, which has a lot more traffic and game play oriented posts than the S&W forum? 2) I have a couple small questions. Can I combine them in a single post? Thank you very much in advance

1) Certainly. Probably the best place to post your S&W rules questions is in the S&W sub-board below.
2) I don't see why you shouldn't be able to combine a few small questions into a single post.

I agree that there is a certain amount of overlap, however keep in mind that the purpose of this board is specifically to discuss 1974 OD&D boxed set plus supplements. Most of the time, we put other game material into its own section. (Holmes Basic D&D, for example, has its own section. You also noted correctly that S&W has its own section as well.) This organization helps folks to find things that pertain to the version they are playing without having to look over posts for versions they do not play. If you post your questions in the regular OD&D sections, you might put a tag at the start of the subject line that looks like this: [S&W] You might also make a note in the subject line as to whether you are discussing the Core S&W rules set or the WhiteBox S&W. These versions are similar but slightly different. If I decide it should be moved, I can always put it into the S&W section instead. If you find that I keep moving your threads, then in the future you would probably just want to start them there. As far as the multi-question thread goes, use your judgement. If you ask two questions you might find that one of them gets lost in the middle of a discussion of the other, so often two threads is the way to go. I suppose it would come down to how similar the two questions are, and we don't have a rule on this issue. Hope that helps, and welcome to the boards!

You could also, if you want to reach out to the S&W community, also post your questions on the S&W forum: swordsandwizardry.com/forum/index.phpYou will find a great deal of bountiful riches by going to both.

On the first question, if you ask a rules question outside the S&W sub-forum, you are going to get an answer based on the original D&D game, rather than on the inspired work that is S&W. Don't worry, as most of the questions you will have probably aren't covered in OD&D either, so you'll be hearing how other groups handle the particular situation regardless of the game being played.
On question number two, the answer in general is yes (assuming the questions aren't both really heavy hitters, yet unrelated). Notice how we are answering both questions in our replies.
Welcome to the boards! I figured I'd say howdy here rather than double post in the Introductions thread.

This is a great place to get answers about the various ways one could interpret the S&W rules - for the most part, that's exactly the same as asking how to interpret the OD&D rules. If the question is more specific to S&W - inside the S&W rules, so to speak, then it should probably go into the S&W sub-board. Keep in mind that any question about S&W or OD&D will generate three answers for every two people who respond.

Keep in mind that any question about S&W or OD&D will generate three answers for every two people who respond. Ain't that the truth! Anyway, welcome aboard Retrothomas. Somewhere around here you'll find an answer to your questions. It might not be the answer you were looking for, though!

No doubt--the first thing you need to accept is that not only do we rarely agree on interpretations of the rules, but that there are multiple ways to interpret them in a workable fashion. See the threads on how to use Chainmail in OD&D. I've written a treatise on it and am using my interpretation in game currently and it's working great. There are others who don't like my interpretation at all and have come up with wildly different ones at varying levels of complexity, all of which work great as well.
And that's a feature of OD&D, not a bug.
As for posting S&W questions in the OD&D boards, I'd recommend against it, for exactly the reasons above. S&W is inspired by OD&D and is a retro clone to a point, but in many ways it's also an interpretation of the rules, which some love and some don't feel is close enough to the original intent (as we imagine it). For that reason above all else, I think it's best keep S&W questions to the S&W forum.
