In my copy of Vol. 3, balrogs are listed as result #10 on the dragon type subtable. What replaces this in later editions?
What would it mean in your campaign that balrogs are a kind of dragon?

They're listed in mine, too, but there is no information on them other than that listing. (I do have it from other sources, though.)
They could be related to dragons, I guess. It would mean a full abandonment of the Tolkien origin (or at least a great expansion thereof, to include the dragons). I'm sure it would have some effect, but it's too late at night for me to come up with one.

I don't believe TSR ever removed all the references to Balrog from the rules, just the description.

My 3 LBB are cobbled together from different sets, mostly post Tolkien estate snit. But they do show up at least in the tables on mine as well. Interesting.

I don't have Balrogs listed on my 6th print dragon subtype table (assuming you're referring to page 11).
[EDIT]Never mind; I was looking at Volume 2. My copy of Volume 3 is from a 5th print PDF (my 6th print "Beater" was missing the 4 middle pages, which I had to replace from a PDF printout).

I had the idea that maybe balrogs are listed as 'dragon types' because they're associated with fire. Then kobolds would be 'giant types' because they're associated with earth, and flying creatures and sea creatures would obviously be air and water respectively.

Similar to this thread re: Giant Types. Some kind of common trait apperceived by the writer. It's either that, or maybe you'd encounter them in a similar place or circumstance to dragons, or they're a similar threat level to dragons.

In my copy of Vol. 3, balrogs are listed as result #10 on the dragon type subtable. What replaces this in later editions? The 2014 Premium Edition lists Chimeras at #10 (p.19). What would it mean in your campaign that balrogs are a kind of dragon? If I used balrogs as a kind of dragon, they'd probably be some dragon/demon half-breed. Maybe that's what happens when a dragon trades their firstborn for some obsucre knowledge.

That would make flaming M&T balrogs "red-dragon" type crossbreeds. Other balrog types could have elemental damage types instead of flaming: Blue balrogs would be lighting-types, green balrogs would be surrounded in chlorine gas...

Of course! I'd love to see an ice balrog in my game at some point!
