I just got back from a business trip to Croatia, of all places, and I had a blast wandering around through the town of Grozhnjan (the 'zh' is really the 'z' with the little 'v' shape on top) - the town dates from before the 1300s, and the outside of many of the buildings have been restored to their older appearance. I ought to make a photobucket account to host the pictures I took of the place, but was an instructive experience as to what a medieval town might have been like (well, aside from the vast improvements in sanitation...) The 'streets' (more like alleyways at times) could be as narrow as 5 feet, winding between 3-story tall buildings on either side - the place was a maze, and it was easy to get lost, evan as small as it was. Three spearmen could easily have held a street, but I'd hate to have to fight on that uneven pavement, especially if it were slickw with rain, blood...raw sewage... falling on it would not be fun, either (watch your head.)

Check. <scribbles new note in journal> During any but clement weather, treat all but the best maintained urban streets as bad going. This is good to know when that tavern brawl spills onto the street. Especially at night, in the dark. It's the special little details that enhance the game.

Thanks Thorulfr!!! Those are great shots. I am totally envious as the oldest place I've probably ever been is St. Louis or some place in Alabama during a visit from the north during my childhood...
