Got a "follow your favorites" email from DTRPG today for TLG. C&C PHB freebie and module A0- "The Rising Knight" for $1. I've run A0 a couple of times, and it definitely falls into a "favorites" for me. It's a mini sandbox area with an interesting small town and NPCs, a couple of wilderness area descriptions with encounter tables, and a small forgotten temple/dungeon (which is sentient-I've had a blast with this thing). Quite a few adventure hooks to do your own thing, or tie it into the next and larger adventure sandbox area described in A1- Assault on Blacktooth Ridge ( also *highly* recommended). I paid full price for the print version of A0 years ago (and bought the PDF compilation of A0-A5 as well) and found it money well spent. No affiliate links- just a PSA from a fan. C&C A0 + PHB

A lot of good stuff is free But $1 is certainly a good deal, especially with a recommendation. So I just got a copy... maybe I'll post some thoughts after a bit of a read.

I've had a read of The Rising Knight. In fact I wrote a kinda lengthy review, but then decided not to post it here because I recognise I'm seeing it thru OD&D-coloured glasses, and this is the C&C sub-forum. And it all happened 13 years ago anyways. The short version is: it's a beginner scenario for C&C written by Davis Chenault (co-designer and writer of C&C itself). There's a good chance that anyone who loves C&C and groks DC's writing style will likewise appreciate A0. On the other hand, it's not a perfect fit for OD&D (and it's not meant to be). Through that lens I could quibble that the adventure "goes a bit easy" on the (admittedly, level 1 beginner) PCs; that the backstory doesn't quite work for me; and that it could (if it were written for OD&D, which of course it isn't) have been delivered in around half the word count. Was it worth $1 invested? For me to glimpse what the big names were doing back in 2010; sure. Could I run it as an OD&D con or demo game? Sure I could. Will it become one of my personal favourites? Nah. But it's an interesting read none the less. Thanks jeffb for the pointer edit: perhaps it would be an entertaining exercise to do a cut-down, OD&D version... but thhhat's a whole different discussion!

Yep. It's not an OD&D style adventure at all. Looking at it that way, it's a failure.
I'd say it's probably a bit more 2E than 1E (or maybe its closer to something post 1983 1E).
That said, I've run several adventures over the years that get little praise by many on a read through, that were a blast in actual play. Moldvay's B3 edit is a fine example. Ive run it a few times over the last 20 years using various O/TSR rules as well as Dungeon World, and it has always been a good time. A0 has been the same. And there are plenty of "classics" discussed in old school circles that I feel are "stinkers".Different strokes, and that's ok.
