Hello - I recently joined a table where the DM had some interesting home rules.
First, he used a spell point system.
Second, when rolling your attributes he has you roll 4d6, reroll any ones and take the highest OR you can take his roll, which he hides until you decide.
Last, at end of game he distributes a number of inspiration points to each player based on difficulty and level of adventure.
The catch is, you can't keep them but most give them away to other players and state why you do so.
He was running a character too and another player saved him so he gave 3 points to that player.
One player gave the DM 3 points for running a fun game and for making dinner that night for everyone who came.
It was my first session with them and to welcome me most of them gave me the most points of all.
I have to say it was very fun and thought I'd share it.
5E is not my favorite but it is good to be gaming again and I thought he was onto something here.
I also liked that he used some old school rulings to keep the game moving -- at one point he just kind of ended a combat in the players favor (mostly) because it had become too long and he kind of just narrated the ending.
It is not something I've done but it worked well that night.

I enjoy granting "boons" to players for good role-playing, clever thinking, or even just a great die roll. It's entirely subjective. I bought an enormous bag of "gold coins" at a party store for like $5, and I hand them out as appropriate. They can be "cashed-in" for a re-roll, advantage, or whatever — it's not worth over-thinking it. The only constraint is that you have to use the coins during the session you earn them — you cannot bank them for next time!

Players can't do a re-roll, but they can cash in those d6's to roll on top of an existing roll. If they have more than one, they can cash them in one at a time until they get a number they deem high enough before I tell them for certain if they succeeded or failed the roll. I let them use them for pretty much anything -- attacks, saves, damage rolls, whatever they like.

I am not a fan of 5E.
I am a big fan of good groups.
Good groups make up for bad rules. I'd rather have a good group and bad rules than a bad group with my favorite rules.
It sounds like you had fun. That is the best way to play.
