We've discussed in several threads the concept of a "1937 Hobbit only" RPG and I just found this thread on RPG pub from 2018. Or maybe I've seen it before and forgot about it since I see that I posted in the thread. www.rpgpub.com/threads/there-and-back-again-a-hobbit-rpg-by-ray-otus.2206/Anyway, apparently there is a game called "There and Back Again" and at least in 2018 you could get a free copy of the game, according to the author. ---------------------------- EDIT: It would appear that it's no longer free and is now called "The Hero's Journey" www.drivethrurpg.com/product/177622---------------------------- SECOND EDIT: You can still download the original from the author. rayotus.itch.io/tabaAlso, the newer one (The Hero's Journey) is apparently based on my own S&W WB rules!

Yeah, the original is waaaay too short. No idea about the current 2E Hero's Journey one. I agree that it's a great source of inspiration, even if it's a little minimalistic for a long campaign.

Ray would love to talk about it, I'm sure. He's over on the Audio Dungeon Discord, he's an Anchor podcaster and is active. Would it be OK if I invited him here?

Just let him know that when he signs up to post to the join thread ASAP and mention you. We can fast track him into the boards, since you know him already.

Hi all! A couple of quick responses and a bit on how There and Back Again came to be. 1) The item on DTRPG, "Hero's Journey," is not mine and is not related to There and Back Again - except that I think it was inspired by the same original blog post. My game's official locations is: rayotus.itch.io/taba. 2) RE: "Yeah, the original is waaaay too short. No idea about the current 2E Hero's Journey one. I agree that it's a great source of inspiration, even if it's a little minimalistic for a long campaign." Sure. It's a jumping off point like most minimalist games. I disagree that they can't support long campaigns. I have done it and I have seen it done - long campaigns from extremely short rules. That being said, I have not tried it with There and Back Again. (Going to call it TABA from here to save myself finger cramps .) 3) Origin story/purpose of TABA. It started while I was looking at alternative art for the Hobbit (alternative to the Brothers Hildebrandt et al who did the calendars). People like Cor Blok. That led me to the post at Rise Up Comus "1937 Hobbit as a Setting" and it was short jump for me to get from there to imagining what a game based on the 1937 Hobbit would look like. I haven't touched it since making it. I'm happy with it, mostly. If I were to go back I would change the format and explain more/expand just a tad here and there. I think part of me was also responding to talk about The One Ring at the time. All the talk (I have never played it) makes it sound over-systematized to me. It also sounded like "yet another D&D" in a lot of ways - in that while service was paid to things like journeys the basic carriage was that trad combat-centric RPG we all know and lover in its many forms. As the game flowed out of my keyboard I found I wanted to emphasize free-form characters and lore/poetry as the "heart" of the system. Anyway, it has gotten a good response from many people and seems to scratch an itch.

Interesting that the two games are not the same. For some reason I thought they were. My error. Oh, I owe you a ")." For got to close the parens on item 2 and it was bugging me. I think I fixed it for you. There is an "edit" feature that allows making changes like that.

Yeah, I didn't want to start off my first post having the "edited" tag on it. Weird quirk I guess.

I’m glad you joined, posted and explained, Ray. Thank you for that. I actually agree that super lite rules does not equal an inability to carry a game a long ways. I’ve run RISUS games for around about as long as any others.
I likewise agree that games such as The One Ring, whilst giving thought to such a medium or source by way of mechanics…..does such even need mechanics?…and yes, the rest is, indeed, just another rpg…so…yes, in a way, back to square one. Heh.
The “poetry” point is an interesting one. That gives me food for thought.
