Something that always had me scratching my head about the 1974 Tactical Studies Rules Warriors of Mar was that Heritage had the rights to the miniatures and supposedly asked Gary and Co. to do up the rules. If the ERB estate was in a twist over the game, why didn't Heritage step in to smooth things over or explain that the rules would help sell miniatures and that is why they did it.
Anyway, the real reason for this post is the 1978 (just four years later) John Carter, Warlord of Mars, RPG designed by Michael S. Matheny, with a cover by Russ Manning, and published by Heritage Models, Inc. as a 64-page book. Has anyone played it? If so, how does it compare to WoM?
Of course, in 1979, SPI published a two-player board game John Carter: Warlord of Mars—which again, has to make one wonder, with the ERB people signing game licenses left and right, why did they go after Tactical Studies Rules so hard that they couldn't come to some agreement? Weird.
