Players wanted for a PBP campaign on our server, the Vulgar Unicorn, on Discord.
Starbeard and cometaryorbit have been play testing a dungeon in this setting with me since March and we have enjoyed it successfully. You can check it out in the "Funhouse" channel on the server.
They have played a magic-user, Caph, and cleric, Sylvanus, respectively. So, specifically, we have been running Miro FM2 as an NPC who now needs a player. We can, of course, have additional players join.
Play style is abstract:
Referee rolls all dice.
In the main, referee rolls up all characters.
Designate caller or party leader per expedition.
Set standing orders.
The style is action-oriented; puzzles, traps, combat, extraction, etc.
"Role play" means your characters has agency within a simulation of a medieval fantasy. It does not, in the main, mean "play acting," although there are occasions for some dialogue and for some elaboration of the description of your characters behavior. In the main, however, NPC reaction will be determined by reaction rolls modified by the character's charisma. There is certainly room for player to player humor and interaction.
For underworld exploration:
I will assume a generous and charitable understanding of the party continually deploying standard LBB described exploration until discovering something or encountering something that demands more detailed orders.
Ten foot pole in front rank. Forward movement until there is an obvious choice to be made. Left priority turning, Left priority door opening (all things being equal), ten-foot pole operation, listen-at, check traps, open door, explore room: ceiling, floor, walls, check traps when objects are discovered, etc.
Three attempts to open doors and objects by up to three characters before moving on. One attempts at listening, traps, secret doors, and other standard exploration procedures before moving on.
All of the above resolved, in the main, abstractly through die rolls.
A couple of significant puzzles/traps per lair/level that slow things down a bit but grant more role play agency than the standing orders.
2 Moves (actions) per Turn; Random Encounter Check per Turn.
Combat
Playing party always has initiative.
Set standing orders include missile first, where possible, always aiming at things that can cast spells, first; player will designate magic user spell priority, e.g., sleep if possible; charm leader-types; light for undead and fell if sleep fails, etc.
After movement, missile, and magic, melee just continues until some kind of clear victory condition arises, either by attrition or, more likely, loss of morale. Marching order assumed as "formation." Set spear against charge an option. Etc.
Time commitment
The abstraction has allowed us to keep things moving at a pretty swift clip, for a PBP. We ask that players check Discord at least five or six times a week and, when posting is necessary (remember, there is a caller) to post within at least 48 hours of when an action has been requested, or else let us know when we can expect a response. I would like the caller to post within 24 hours, if possible. I am a professor and a priest, so there will be times when I as the referee will be unavailable around school year crunch times, Holy Week, Easter, and leading up to Christmas. Things also tend to slow down during the summer, as we are all going on vacations at different times.
Setting and tone
Setting is generic S&S that is also fairly abstract. Tone is safe-for-work with some occasional tongue-in-cheek non seriousness. Humor is for players. The world is serious for the characters and their actions will have an impact on the world. Some humor provide "meta game" clues for the players. The characters wouldn't "get it," but it is okay for the players to act on their knowledge. More details to come.
Rules
The LBBs as modified by my Perilous Realms convention-games house-rulings and my own world-generation tables, inspired consistently by the LBBs and compatible with them, for creating a believable world "behind the screen." Details will be provided.
Communication
Please communicate with me, clearly, as the referee, your goals as a player and what is fun for you, and your characters goals within the game-world. I will accommodate for both player and character goals as much as possible within this general abstract frame.
Referee style
Your characters are the stars of this simulation; I am not a killer referee. I referee strictly but fairly, and I am always happy when players and characters succeed. We play "old school" war-game style so there will be character death. Take a hit for the team, pick up your new character, move on. Characters that inherit from dead characters start at half the deceased's level.
Perhaps Starbeard and Banks can comment on their experiences so far and also add any more detail to the above that might be helpful.
Fight on!
