Hi all - experienced RPG player but brand new to wargaming and just recently got access to ODD74 (thank you!). Has anyone compiled a list of errata, typos, etc for Chainmail please? As I browse the various threads here, I occasionally see comments like “this is obviously a typo or a mistake in the written rules” or even “this is a well-known typo”. It’s hard enough for newbies to understand the rules without having to contend with mistakes in the written text as well! 😅

odd74.proboards.com/thread/7060/chainmail-errataI have not read 3rd edition Chainmail, which is the one currently available in pdf. If it's anything like second edition, then I don't think typo's should be much of a bother. There HAVE been additions to the rules between printings; probably corrections, too. But, no errata sheet, as far as I'm aware. The Domesday Book newsletter was Gygax' periodical at the time. Maybe, he slipped the corrections in there.

Some sort of errata (or rather a supplement) for 1st edition was published in International Wargamer. Check Jon's blog and book.
Between 2nd and 3rd there are differences. More spells (8 vs 16), nations (Poles, Russians, Spanish, Japanese - Samurai etc.), monsters (hobgoblins, zombies, giant wolves), additional rules here and there (overlapping rule, leaders, mounted men vs footmen), spell complexity etc.

I'm not aware of any significant typos. If you have the 3rd edition there are a couple.
p15 Post Melee Morale step 4, for 20-39 difference it should say "back 1/2 move, good order".
p41 Appendix B Man-to-Man Melee Table, foot note should say "if dismounted and prone..."
p44 Appendix E Fantasy Combat Table, Balrog vs Roc should be "10". This one is present in the 2nd edition as well.

p44 Appendix E Fantasy Combat Table, Balrog vs Roc should be " 10". This one is present in the 2nd edition as well. The refs to Balrogs were complete excised from my copies of 3rd ed. According to my sources, the numbers on the horizontal (defender) axis: 7 11 11 8 8 4 6 10 7 6 4 8 11, and along the vertical (attacker) axis: 7 6 10 12 9 11 10 12 9 10 12 7 10.
