Maybe strongholds in a magical setting should be more like 16th+ century star-shaped artillery fortresses. So much combat magic is like artillery fire. So too, to a certain degree, attack from flying monsters. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqIa-NpzAfg

I would think there are probably different types depending on the purpose of the stronghold.
Something built to defend against orcs, goblins, gnolls, etc. on the edge of human-inhabited lands would probably be like smaller/simple historical castles... motte-and-bailey castle or keep (e.g. "Keep on the Borderlands") - relatively inexpensive compared to the really large complex castles, and good enough for that role since orcs, goblins, gnolls, etc. don't have access to powerful combat magic (and they may not have the patience for long sieges either).
Something built on borders between human nations, where the threats are expected to have magic and (from the castle garrisons given) flying mounts are likely expected as well, would be quite different -- maybe like a star fort, or a largely-underground construction to defend against air attack. (Or maybe underground constructions inside a star fort? The weakness of the underground version would be things like Cloudkill...)

cometaryorbit, I like that. That makes a lot of sense. IMC, there are a bunch of strongholds and they are all at war with each other and they all have high powered MUs and clerics, so, they may all need to be star forts!

And then there may have been flying fortresses...

Thank you!
There may also be old castles in areas that used to be 'borderlands' but are now civilized*, which might just be nobles' residences now, or could be rebuilt into more 'modern' fortifications (perhaps the dungeons beneath them are delved into an underground stronghold, and a 'star' built up around them...)
*On the other hand, if the current era is a "dark age" after the fall of a prior civilization, thus lots of ruins and old magic items lying around, maybe not...
