According to page 16 of Men & Magic:
It takes a fighting-man 240,000 xp to attain 9th level. It takes a magic-user 300,000 xp to attain 11th level. It takes a cleric 100,000 xp to attain 8th level.
How many xp does it take for those classes to attain higher levels than those mentioned?

For what it's worth, this also mostly carried over to AD&D with the major exception that they added another level to Cleric (High Priest) to bring the XP/level up to 200,000. Presumably someone did the math and did a double-take.

I know that some Arduin campaigns were supposed to go up to level 50 (or higher) and I've often thought it would be fun to extrapolate the OD&D class tables up to level 50 or 100 or something absurd, just to see what they would look like. I'm not sure what would be the purpose of such an activity, as I doubt I would ever make use of it. Doesn't stop me from thinking about it.

I was looking at the Warlock XP tables (again), this past weekend. The current iteration of the Warlock rules go up to and include level 30.

I know that some Arduin campaigns were supposed to go up to level 50 (or higher) Is that what the comment in the Foreword to Supplement IV about "the absurdity of 40+ level characters" is referring to?

Maybe. Also, in reading Jon Peterson's new book (The Elusive Shift) I encountered a story about some player in 1975 boasting about a 250th level Wizard a year or less after OD&D came out. Apparently, some groups advanced faster than others.

250th? Wow, that's pretty crazy.
The rules on XP awards in the LBBs aren't terribly clear, I wonder if that involved some sort of misunderstanding -- or if it was just a matter of a lot of 1 million gp value gems, etc.

I remember reading in the mid-range issues of The Dragon (between issues 60 and 120, iirc) about some absurd 250th level wizard named Waldo.
