Maybe. I don't generally play MMO games, so I'm not up to date on these things.

I've been playing this quite a bit the last few months. It definitely plays a lot like D&D in the sense that a big part of it is about killing monsters and getting treasure. My least favorite part about the game is all the slayer quests. Your goal: Kill 30 wolves. Accomplished - new goal: Kill 60 wolves. It's such a grind, and it feels depopulating an area of its native species. I understand the need to keep predators in check, but this feels more like extermination.
On the plus side, there's more than just fighting in the story. You can ignore the story and explore Middle-earth on your own. Note that some areas are much too dangerous for lower-level characters. And there are festivals where your quests involve learning to dance and eating six pies in a minute.

You make it sound surprisingly similar to World of Warcraft.

Something like that, even if the details are different. When you kill enemies, you get stuff (furs/wings/etc from animals, broken weapons from humanoids) that you can sell or use for your crafts. You do get xp from crafting. You can get a soldier and take part in skirmishes and battles.
It's pretty much a D&D game set in Middle-earth. There's nothing wrong with that. But if that style of play isn't your cup of tea, you may want to give it a pass. I must admit I'm having fun with it, especially since I'm doing the Midsummer quests.

I've been playing this game too much. I had a dream about seeing someone with a large golden ring floating above his head. For those not in the know, it means someone has a quest for your character.

Unfortunately, all US servers are down (EU servers are still up), so I won't be able to finish the Midsummer quests this year.

The boards are back up, although there's still a bit of lag.

I've been trying to do a LOTRO to D&D conversion. It's not perfect, but here are some rough guidelines.
Races: This part is the most straightforward. Hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans correspond to their D&D counterparts. Treat High Elves and Stout-axes as elves and dwarves respectively. Beornings are the only instance of race as class.
Class: LOTRO Classes have abilities that correspond to more than one D&D class, so in most cases, there are different ways to do it.
Beorning: Barbarian (rage stat) or druid (shapechanging) Burglar: Thief Captain: Paladin or cleric (they can buff other characters) Champion: Fighter or barbarian (fervour is similar to rage) Guardian: Fighter or paladin Hunter: Ranger Loremaster: Magic-user or druid (animal companions, healing spells) Minstrel: Bard or cleric (healing spells) Runekeeper: Magic-user or cleric Warden: Fighter or ranger
A Brawler class is currently in development. Monk would probably be the best fit for this class.
Levels: Level 130 is maximum in LOTRO. I'm thinking about having every 10 LOTRO levels equal one D&D level. This would give a maximum D&D level of 13. If you like high-level play, divide by 5 instead. Round all fractions up.

LotRO sounds like a blast. I play a lot of DDO, 10 characters over 2 servers so far, finally sprung for a VIP account for a few months, now that I have a decent paying job.
I started last year during their free days until April, then extended into August or September. Now I'm hooked! lol
Does LotRO use the same engine as DDO?
Do I have to download game stuff to my PC for the greater part of a day to get started?
Do LotRO characters level up like DDO characters?

I don't play DDO, although it's owned by the same company. It turns out that the MMO style of play. I hate the slayer deed grinds, and I don't care about the storyline. I enjoy exploring Middle-earth, which is why I enjoy the game. Not interested in playing other MMO games. That said, LOTRO is a blast. Here's a list of the top five things I noticed about the game. 5. Don't accept quests where you escort NPCs to safety. Those guys are inherently suicidal. 4. When aiding NPCs in battles, wait for them to run in the direction they actually intend to go. They only do that after running in the opposite direction for the first few seconds. 3. Angmarim priestesses are a study in butterface. 2. Take part in the yearly festivals. You can level up faster by picking flowers than killing orcs. 1. Watch out for level 100 deer.

I finally made it to level 100 in LOTRO. Now I need to get a good Legendary Item to imbue.

It turns out there is a Google Maps site for the game. You can zoom in to different locations that list NPCs, services, and even hidden treasure locations. Yes, this is for the MMO, but it can be of use for running D&D games in Middle-earth. I wrote up an adventure set near a town in Lebennin, so showing the players a map of the general area is a big help. lotromap.net/terrainmap/google.html

Congrats on getting to Level 100 two years ago I played LOTRO awhile back, and yes, the grind... that's what turns me off on a lot of MMOs and video games - the grind. I mean, I get it from the older games - I still remember grinding on Ultima and Bards Tale... but you'd think they'd have figured out that nobody likes the grind.

Thanks. My main character is at level cap (140) and is semi-retired until they raise the maximum level. I have a couple of other characters. My minstrel is a bit of a humorous character. His fashion sense stinks (his color choices make him look like the Riddler), and his mission in life is to teach everyone how to play the cowbell.
