Hey OD&Ders!
Is anyone going to the NTRPGCon 2019?
The K&KA on-line forum always has a social and it is always fun. It alternates between 0e and 1e games.
If we could get a critical mass from this forum going, I think it would be fun to have a social (with a little gaming as well).
Even just three or four would be worth it to me.
Zenopus usually goes.
Anyone else?
Fight on!

Bummer. Maybe one of these years we should pool to get you out there as a special guest so you could run an OD&D game AND Chainmail!

It seems like the whole concept of "armies fighting" is lost on most people.

@gronanofsimmerya, I will try to find and talk with the leadership while I am there this year and I will see if I can convince them to invite you as a special guest next time.
That would solve the money issue.

No interest. Especially after the incident with the guy from Hydra Cooperative. Cooled my ardor right smartly, it did.

Exotic sand tables were not as much a thing as ping pong tables used for miniatures for those of us in the next generation. About the same size but also much more readily available to play on

It seems like the whole concept of "armies fighting" is lost on most people. Um, no. The rulebook is obtuse and relies on common knowledge and assumptions that are no longer common. I have poured over that book line by line, participated in games at cons, and played it at home. It's not that easy.

Is anyone going to be there either Saturday night or Sunday morning?
I have openings in my schedule at those times and I thought an ODD74 meetup with (potentially) a pick-up game might be rad.

I’m going again this year. This year will mark 10/11 for me.
Won’t be staying thru Sun/Mon like usual, tho. Have to drive back to Wichita on Saturday for a family event on that Sunday.

DING DING DING. Friendly moderator intervention!
@gronanofsimmerya, to quote a dashing Spanish warrior-poet with excellent taste mid-morning, second-breakfast blueberry muffins:
"If the old cockerel doesn't hurry back to the barn, the young fox will dine on chicken breast tonight."

I have poured over that book line by line, participated in games at cons, and played it at home. It's not that easy. To quote Tim Kask,"if you have trouble understanding CHAINMAIL, you need to work on your reading comprehension." Red emphasis mine. Tim's quote is quite funny to a person who grew up on that stuff, and potentially insulting to a person with a different background. In general I'd rather be inclusive than divisive in our discussion, however, so specific answers to specific questions would be helpful. All potential snarkiness aside, I do think that a good point has been raised here. I think that when I learned Chainmail in the 1970's it seemed pretty easy and I'm not sure it was because I'm some super-genius or anything like that. I think it traces in part to my background of playing hex-and-chit wargames and other miniatures rules sets and so that stuff just seemed natural. (I had a similar experience reading the OD&D books and we all know that they are considered to be poorly organized by many. I suspect those who struggle with OD&D are many of the same folks who struggle with Chainmail.) While Chainmail is pretty clear and exact to folks in that context, I can clearly see where a person with a background in computer games, RPGs, and modern boardgames might be thrown by the way the rules are written. I know that a lot of modern boardgames make my brain melt, but my son just cracks open the rulebook and plays the thing. (I have the same problem with phones. I can navigate like crazy through my flip-phone but am all thumbs when using my daughter's smart phone. I think this is a background issue more than an intellect issue.)

CHAINMAIL was my first exposure to wargames when I read it. I was sixteen.

I'd like to go this year, family and real-life commitments permitting. I've heard nothing but good things about NTRPG Con for years. We moved to central Texas last year for my job, so now I'm in driving distance...

I've been signed up since March but hesitated to post here since I wasn't sure if I was actually going to make it. But now it looks like I will. I'll arrive Friday mid-day and leaving Sunday morning, so a shorter trip than last year. Due to my certainty about attending I didn't submit any games to run this time. Games I'm signed up to play in: Fri 2-5: Castle Greyhawk Level by Rob Kuntz, OD&D game run by Paul Stormberg ( stormberg ). Grodog ( grodog ) is also playing in this. Fri 8-12: Zenopus - 40 years later. This is another gamer's sequel to the Zenopus dungeon & he invited me to play in it. This is his second year running it. John Hershberger ( tacojohn4547 ) is also playing in this. Sat 9-1: The Queen of Elfland's Son: DCC game run by Jonathan Perkel, who started the Holmes FB group & played Boinger in my game last year. Sat 1-6: 80's Heroes vs Monsters Costume Party Chaos. Non-D&D RPG game run by...Chris Holmes! DM Carl of Save or Die - another Holmes afficianado & played Bardan last year - is playing in this as well. Sat 6-10: Ruins of Mistamere run by Lloyd Metcalf. A sequel/re-imagining of the Sample Dungeon from the Mentzer Basic Set, using AD&D 1e rules.

I’d love to, Nathan. But my daughter and I have to drive back to Wichita on Saturday, so we’ll miss the tail end of the con.

I haven't been able to find a game for Saturday night. If any of you are open, how about an ODD74 pick up game Saturday evening? Anybody up for it? I'm in Chainsaw's game on Saturday night already. I may do a pickup game on Thursday night, if the Social is too full. Allan.

We wanted to go show our film, but funds are low. Maybe sales will increase and we can justify it, or perhaps next year.
