I've noticed that all of the retro clones I've looked at use the 3rd edition SRD. I suppose this is mostly historical, as they have their first iterations before 2016, but I wanted to ask a few questions in this connection:
1) Are there any OSR/retro clone games based on the 5th edition SRD? 2) Are there any features of either the 3rd or 5th edition SRDs which would make them a better choice for a new retro clone in your opinion?
I realize 2 is a massive question, but if anyone has a view on it, I'd be glad to hear it.

I believe that there is one called Dungeonesque, but unfortunately I know little about it other than comments on forums expressing disappointment that it doesn't tailor the rules to match its old-school presentation.

I broke down and bought a copy of Dungeonesque, in spite of the fact that I heard it was mostly the free 5E Basic rules repackaged. I haven't looked at it much, but it does seem to be kind of neat. Not sure about the value, however.
For 5E, are the free Basic rules the equivalent of an SRD? There would seem to be a difference between a free download and a set of rules which others could use to sell their own rules set.
I'm really surprised that somehow we haven't gotten 5E Space, 5E Wild West, 5E Modern, and so on.

Just from a brief comparison, I can say that the free rules and the SRD are different. On the one hand the SRD has more (more races, more classes, more spells), but on the other hand the free version uses copyrighted words (Free Rules: Otto's Irresistible Dance; SRD: Irresistible Dance; Free rules talks about beholders, though no actual stats; SRD doesn't mention beholders or some other iconic monsters).

The SRD includes much more than the Basic Rules, actually. Apart from Dungeonesque, there's a nice "B/X hack" (the author dubs it O5R, which I like) called Into the Unknown - I'm really looking forward to the finished books!
Check it out here:

In general I find the d20 SRD more useful for finding OGL content for the Wilderlands Revised Editions. The 5e SRD doesn't have the scope of the d20 SRD or the Pathfinder reference document.
As for a retro clone anything based on the 5e SRD would be more of a retro RPG than a clone. The starting point would the table of contents of the d20 Basic Rules and assemble a version of it out of the 5e SRD. Then where do you from there?
A starting point could be reducing the level range from 1 to 20 to a focus on 1 to 12. Realign creatures and bounded accuracy to fit that range. But other than that The TOC of the D&D 5e basic rules is on par with classic Editions.
If you axe proficiency, the action round, skills, most class abilities and so on the I don't see the point of using 5e as the base. Might as well at that point avail yourself of the full range of open content.
There are some 5e mechanics that work well for classic edition mechanics like advantage disadvantage. Some classes that extensively reworked may be interesting for classic editions like the Barbarbarian, Warlock or Sorcerer.

I've been working on a B/X spiritual clone using the 5e srd for a couple weeks now. I say spiritual because the core mechanics will still revolve around bounded accuracy and advantage/disadvantage. These are the changes I have been making:
1. Four Races (Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Human) 2. Four Classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Wizard) 3. No archetypes, feats, or skills (except for Rogue) 4. XP for Gold 4. Group initiative 5. Make cantrips true level 0 spells with slots required for use 6. Lots of other changes to combat to simplify things and speed it up.
It's been a lot of work and I'm not sure if it will really appeal to anyone but I've been enjoying the process and the detailed look its required me to give B/X.

Sounds fun to me, B3L7. Hope you share it with us when you get something thrown together!
