I stopped reading the books after 5 or 6 because it became too much of a soap opera, so I'm reasonably confident it will translate on the small screen.

I wrote this in the "what are you reading"-thread: It took me years to appreciate how well these books are actually written. Now, the motifs and narrative tropes are often quite old-fashioned and unoriginal, IMO, but the books still read extremely well. An updated and streamlined version of the story could very well become the next "Game of Thrones".

Rated TV-14 for fantasy violence and excessive braid-tugging.

I stopped reading the books after 5 or 6 because it became too much of a soap opera, so I'm reasonably confident it will translate on the small screen. The first few books were very entertaining, but I stopped after Lord of Chaos (book 6?) much for the very reason you describe. I was also really annoyed that my favorite character in the series up to that point (Mat) had all of one, maybe two chapters in that book. I have low expectations, but I'll check out the show in hopes of being pleasantly surprised.

I thought the series nose-dived after Robert Jordan died.
