I've come up with two new classes for Black Books. I'm reasonably happy with the Gadabout, but need more abilities for the Dilettante. If you have any suggestions (for either class), please comment.
Gadabout
As opposed to someone who is poverty-stricken, the Gadabout’s wandering life is a chosen lifestyle. The gadabout takes jobs, sometimes for months, but generally hits the road again as soon as he or she is bored or when they just start to feel “too settled” and needs to move on. The life of the road might seem typically American, but the same sort of life is chosen wherever travel itself is not overtly dangerous.
Gadabout Class Features
Hit Dice: D8
Weapons: Gadabouts can use any non-military weapons
Primary Saves: Ref and Fort
Normal Save: Will
To Hit Rolls: Secondary class ability
Defence Rating: Main class ability
Gadabout main class abilities:
Lucky Break (N/A): The Gadabout gets by through luck as often as by his or her wits. This ability allows the Gadabout to re-roll any failed check again once per adventure. This goes up every three levels, so at 3rd, 6th and 9th.
Folk Tales (WIS): The Gadabout often travel the roads and rails, picking up stories, gossip and folk lore from other travellers along the way. With a successful check, the Gadabout can recall some fact or bit of a story that might be relevant to whatever situation the PCs are in at the time.
Get By (DEX): The Gadabout picks up some skills along the way to help them survive in their life on the road. You can choose one Sneak ability as one of your own Main Class Abilities.
Hobo Signs (INT): The Gadabout can read (and create) signs left by hoboes and other drifters. These signs are often scratched or drawn onto walls or left as twigs and stones in a particular pattern on the ground. They are often mundane messages, like “food can be had here”, or “beware the dogs” and so forth. However, there are often more supernatural warnings and messages and sometimes even spells.
Dilettante
The Dilettante is a moneyed individual who does little or no work. He or she is well educated, though not necessarily accomplished in anything. Having money frees the dilettante to be lazy, eccentric and/or outspoken. He or she has had plenty of time to take up a range of pursuits and interests; usually in a very casual way. The Dilettante appears to be knowledgeable but this knowledge is only superficial and the Dilettante is usually found out by anyone who has real knowledge of a subject.
Dilettante Class Features
Hit Dice: D8
Weapons: Dilettantes can use any non-military weapons
Primary Save: Choose one
Normal Saves: The two that weren’t chosen as primary
To Hit Rolls: Secondary class ability
Defence Rating: Secondary class ability
Dilettante main class abilities:
Dabbler (INT, WIS or CHA): Choose any one class ability of any class that is based on INT, WIS or CHA and that becomes one of your main class abilities.
Saddles, Wings & Wheels (DEX): The Dilettante often likes to live dangerously and be the first to try exciting new things. They ride horses, drive fast cars (often entering races) and dabble in flying.
