I know Goblinoid Games is a publisher and who else? I mean, if it is a clone, how many can you have? There is your basic and advanced fantasy game, post apocalypse game, and your sanity draining horror game. That pretty much covers the classic retro games. Unless we also count the varients such as C&C. Do they count? Just wondering how the scene operates.
And of course, Swords and Wizardry.

I thought that TLG only published for C&C and LA. Did I miss one?

There are the publishers of the rules... and then there are the publishers of supplements and adventures. Of course: supplements and adventures! I've been reading up on the retro-clones and every time I came across "publisher" I kept forgetting that the purpose of the retro-clone is for the publisher of supplements and adventures -- not the retro-clone publisher himself. I spent the better part of the day researching that list, and even spent some money looking for other's vision of old-school before coming to the same conclusion Jim did on his excellent blog, particularly this post. (Oh well, at least the pod-men are freaking cool! I'm stealing that for sure.) I thought that TLG only published for C&C and LA. Did I miss one? Yeah, that's what I was wondering too. I'm guessing that some consider C&C a retro-clone and some don't (along with all the bad blood that comes from firmly taking a side in either camp -- something I'm NOT interested in exploring in this thread.)

I thought that clones were each trying to emulate a particular version of D&D as closely as possible without being illegal? Which would C&C be emulating?

I thought that clones were each trying to emulate a particular version of D&D as closely as possible without being illegal? Which would C&C be emulating? For me, the term retro-clone happily encompasses quite a variety...and that's all to the good ;D. I sort of figure that clones try to emulate the feel and flavour of various 70s and 80s rpgs...with an emphasis on invention and creation and gm common-sense rather than huge rulebooks that try to cover every eventuality. Although clones focus mainly on D&D (in its various guises) I think they also encompass other 'old school' rpgs...off-hand I can think of Goblinoid Games Mutant Future and it's drawing on TSRs Gamma World. It also has room for new games using old style rules...I'm thinking Engines and Empires a gaslight fantasy game also using GG's Labyrinth Lord (B/X) rules. I would include C&C as a clone as it is intentionally very AD&D in feel and style...although, unfortunately, I think some bad blood has caused something of a rift.

...and I can't wait until someone does a clone planetary romance or space opera (I'm looking forward to seeing if TLGs Starsiege fits the bill although I'd rather have a OD&D or B/X version)!

Even though Fantasy Adventure Studios has made the World of Onn into its own ruleset, we did originally publish the World of Onn Supplement I for Swords and Wizardry and there will be a module soon as well as a Supplement II this summer.
