Not to Cold War, but I will be at HMGS-Midwest Little Wars. Running an all-day Chaos Wars game.

You know you could tag along to the East Coast some time to run some Chaos Wars too I might play some on Friday, but after 9 hours of refereeing a wargame, I'm probably going to take Sunday off. Sleep in. That sort of thing. Yea, when I win the lottery or get my trip paid for, sure!

My son and I had a pretty good time this year. Not that we haven't in the past. First day we played in a chariot race that was a lot of fun and a real nail biter. Good simple rules where your choices mattered. My chariot was on it's last leg on the final lap and I decided to go all out in an attempt to give myself a winning chance. Ended up flipping and that's all she wrote. Hint- attacking other chariots in a race is always risky. Not recommended on the first lap. My son played in Don Hogge's Exploring the Dark Continent game. It used the Congo rules. Not my cup of tea, but Don was a very good GM despite having already run two games prior in the day. His voice was going by this game. Thought rsdean would like to hear this since he's a member of HAWKS with Don. I was real happy with our Saturday. My son played in a 15mm Conquistadors vs. Aztec game run by Brian Dewitt. These were his own homebrewed rules. I thought they were well done and enjoyed the game. On top of that, my son maneuvered his troops expertly with a little coaching from dad. He successfully knocked out the Conquistadors cavalry with a flank attack before his opponent could bring them to bear. It could have been ugly. There were four players on each side. Amazingly, the Aztec team won the game overall. So, it was a double win for us. Finished the night out with some mindless Mein Zombie. I always feel zombified by the end of a con. My brain gets a little fuzzy from the long days.

Does membership in HMGS also get you membership in HMGS Midwest?

Membership in, I think, any chapter of HMGS will get you a discount to any of the conventions.
The thing with becoming a member is it is essentially free if you are going to a Con. Membership is $25/ year. A member can attend the whole weekend Cold Wars for $25, where a non-member would be $50. A one day pass is $25 alone. If you attend more than one event, you end up ahead. So, it makes sense to become a member regardless. Other benefits are you can bring your wife and children under 15 for free. Once they turn 15 they have to get a membership.
The big historical miniature con on the East Coast is Historican. I haven't been able to attend this in the past. This year we plan on going.

I passed the comments on to Don Hogge at a game last weekend, by the way, and he appreciates the comments.

Will you be at Little Wars this April? Probably not due to budgetary constraints. Understandable. Chainmail will be represented via Kevin Cabai of the HMGS-Midwest. My OSR contribution is running Ral Partha's Chaos Wars/Rules by Ral - all frickin' Saturday. 3 sessions, 9 hours. The scenarios are related, what happens in one feeds into the next.
