Hey all,
I've currently got a high bid on a copy of Swords & Spells because I'm just oozing with curiousity as to what it is. It certainly seems to be the lost game of its time, because Chainmail has lived on but S&S has not.
Questions: 1. Has anyone played both Chainmail and Swords & Spells and can compare the two? 2. Does anybody use any parts of Swords & Spells in their D&D games? 3. When Chainmail got revised in '79 (the pdf I have, btw), did it incorporate parts of Swords & Spells?

The two biggest things I recall about playing S&S are that (1) it translated a lot of stuff directly from D&D, and (2) casualty determination was wholly deterministic. Dice rolls came up for morale checks and saving throws, and I think that was it.
As material for a regular D&D game, the list of spells is perhaps most interesting; it includes some data missing from D&D. Ranges and durations for spells use the same number of turns/inches even though the scale is different.
There are also base sizes and an initiative system. The combat tables (especially for monsters) are a bit different. I think some weapons are covered that were not included in Chainmail or Greyhawk, in case you use either of those weapon-versus-armor systems.

Sounds like a plan for my next $25 Amazon gift certificate (though I was also thinking about getting Necropolis with that).
