One of my biggest influences (next to Ralph Bakshi's Wizards & the Masters of the Universe mini-comics):
How OD&D is THIS for a campaign opener?
Not to mention the ill-fated Korgoth of Barbaria!

A classic! A veritable Justice League of comic-book rebels and legends worked on that show. Plus Robert Ridgely from Boogie Nights was the voice of Thundarr LOL.

I also loved how "Jack Kirby" many of the designs and especially costumes were. The whole mighty-magic/super-science/post-apocalypse/weird-moon thing really screams of balls-to-the-wall epic adventure!

Great series. If I may be so bold, here are a couple of related links, so folks can play in the world of Thundarr. They seem too good not to share. The 1990s saw this free rpg based on the cartoon. This Kickstarter (looks like it has been funded) will produce miniatures based on Thundarr and company, among other things. Scroll down to see the miniatures.

I also loved how "Jack Kirby" many of the designs and especially costumes were. Don't forget the criminally overlooked contributions by Alex Toth. While "Smilin'" Jack designed the core three characters (plus Gemini), everyone else were designed by Thoth. Hell, Toth designed most (if not all) of Hana-Barbara's " World of Super Adventure" characters and spaceships during the 1960s (another great source of (kid-friendly) savagery, super-science, and sorcery). The 1990s saw this free rpg based on the cartoon. This Kickstarter (looks like it has been funded) will produce miniatures based on Thundarr and company, among other things. Scroll down to see the miniatures. Boy, that site takes me back! I remember going there back in the '90s. Its good to see its unchanged for all those years! Oh, and thanks for the heads-up about the Psi-Paladins & Techno-Barbarians Kickstarter. It seems that they are also working on a line of Yasarian Genetically Altered Ape-Soldier and (hopefully) Gallus Gallus 3/24 Genetically Altered Chicken-Soldier miniatures with their Project Simian Ultra X line. Its good to see such iconic old-school wholly original miniatures available for sale. There is a HUGE Thundarr-following among the old-school Gamma World and Mutant Future communities, with a wellspring of rules, game-notes and conversions. The best Thundarr RPG supplement I've seen is Tim "Sniderman" Snider's The World of Thundarr the Barbarian for Mutant Future. I know Sniderman from another forum, and I did artwork for this " Deviant Database" line of third-party Mutant Future supplements.

The King of Comics, Jack Kirby, was born August 28, 1917, so we're quickly approaching his 100th birthday! DC Comics plans to release some memorials to him this month... Likely to be other recollections/celebrations of his work, but these are the main two I've seen advertised in the comics I've been reading lately.

If I had it my way, I'll take Heavy Metal the movie (with all the sexuality and ultra-violence that comes with it), Thundarr the Barbarian, Kmmandi: Last Boy on Earth, and the early Masters of the Universe mini-comics, then mix some of the self-aware humor of Korgoth of Barbaria (but not too much) with the metal sounds of Metalocalypse, and put it into a blender. Is the world ready for something this epic? Was the world ever ready for anything this epic?
