Obviously they didn't do much research.

Yeah, I wish there were at least one web page or forum that said something about OD&D other than just "it exists".

Yeah, I wish there were at least one web page or forum that said something about OD&D other than just "it exists". If only there was some place that had 2,182 members where people could talk about OD&D daily, and share their homebrew adventures and other ideas with said population.

That just made me feel sick to my stomach.
I had to stop watching after a few seconds.
I am sure they are funny guys, and all. Have they never heard of a Google search?
Would someone please contact these poor benighted souls and give them a link to this place?
Wow.

I have heard of trolling.
But people actually go to the trouble to produce a video just to troll something?
Man, why don't they just play the game rather than make a video.
Don't they have day jobs? Who has time to video troll?

Who has time to video troll? You'd be surprised...

If you watch to the end, they actually do say that they'll roll up characters and try it.
And in the comments they are directed both here and to Ruins of Murkhill.
So I'll reserve judgement until they present their next video, and see if they can be brought to the light or must remain in outer darkness forever.

I found it quite amusing and they're right - the original rulebook is poorly edited, has terrible art and doesn't make sense...when compared with rulebooks of today. I can't see anything they said that isn't true. It doesn't stop us loving it all the more for that.

I thought they were funny but clearly seemed uninformed. On the other hand, it's just possible that they were acting uninformed for comedic effect. As others have noted, however, they are spot on about the lousy artwork and such of our favorite rulebooks. I guess one person's feature is another's bug.
Oh, and I'll get that "Original Gygax D&D" = OGD&D. Uninformed again, or a slap at Dave Arneson? Dunno. It might also explain why their Google-fu failed, if they were searching for OGD&D all of the time.

It might also explain why their Google-fu failed, if they were searching for OGD&D all of the time. Not quite. OG = Original. Kids call anything Original "The OG". *Source* I am 19 years old and have younger siblings and a girlfriend. For example Me : "Hey do you wanna watch Star Wars tonight?" Sister : "The OG Star Wars?"Meaning the original Star Wars. Or, another example Me : "Who's your favourite Batman?" Girlfriend : "Adam West because he's the OG".
Thus in the context of this video OGDND simply means OD&D, or Original Dungeons and Dragons.

The thing is, lamentably, that's the way most people of my age talk about OD&D. (I'm 33, probably one of the younger guys that post here.)
It's not that people meant any disrespect, usually; it's that they either don't know, or don't care. Compared to what most of my peers associate with roleplaying, everything we talk about here seems to feel very "alien". I've run OD&D games at conventions, and people liked them a lot - but their own way of gaming was different. Not worse, not better, just different, regardless of whether they ran a version of D&D, or another game. The only guy I ever who encountered who did seem to understand where I was coming from was the guy who later translated the game "Beyond The Wall" into German.

Moderately funny. I get some of their grievances. For kids used to slickly-produced, full-colour hardbacks, I suppose the LBBs are strange and disappointing, visually at least. The artwork was -- and stil is -- ghastly.
I'd love to learn more about this Oh-Dee-and-Dee, but where on earth can I find people on teh intarwebz who know something about it??? I haz confused.
Oh, and I didn't like their cheap shot about Rush. Rush rules! \m/

Oh, well, just f**k you (to the guys in the video). So, snarking can be fun. But you do so after you know something about what you're talking about.
D&D was ruined by people like this.
Everything good about D&D was leeched out of it by people like this.
It used to be an imaginative catharsis. Now it's just another boring plaything of the cynical hipperati.
Sorry. I'm not exactly neutral on the issue.

The strangest thing for me is that they act like they didn't know what ODnD was before they did some heavy research (read: one Wikipedia search), yet they're an explicitly RPG related channel. Also, a bothersome lack of respect for the work done by a what is at best a tiny publishing company to essentially invent the hobby they now enjoy.
Someone left them a message directing them to this board, and they responded, so better to keep my judgement brief and civil. Hopefully they learn more through some play.

I'm not exactly neutral on the issue. Removed my own picture of Captain America complaining about foul language because it was excessively big. Please, be more chill with the verbiage, oakes. Not that, ahem, we would have much difference of opinion, there, but there are more civil ways to express opposing views. Like, the creators of the video might think that they produced something of value. That alone should be punishment enough. Running a comedy videocast with this sort of a sense of humor, difficult enough already.

Coming to love D&D used to be an event. It was new, and all you had to do was play it once and you were hooked. Right?
But today, it's a process. You have to find it. You have to get a copy. You have to read it.
And you have to let go what else is in your head from over 40 years of roleplaying and read it for what it is.
I've been trying to do that since I got my copy in the 80s, and the discussion on this very forum has shown me I still hadn't made it. I think I'm getting there now.
Much of the snark on this video is over things we have snarked over right here. The difference is, it's ours. We actually play the game.
So we get a bit worked up over some johnny-come-latelies who want to snark on our patch. These are our gripes to make, we say, not yours.
The difference, so far, is that we haven't made a video about it. I know I haven't.
But these guys have.
What happens next, I wonder? Will they try playing the game? Will they give it a fair shake? Or will snark and convenience win out?
They could end up sending a lot of traffic to this site. Indeed, they could become members of this site and find a lot here to use, and come to appreciate the beauty, despite its flaws, of D&D. They could have some fun insights to share (as long as they're willing to play nice).
Or we could be left alone, with just ourselves, which would be fine with me; we're a pretty fun bunch already.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that we have no control over these guys, nor should we. If they want to be buffoons on this matter, let them. It doesn't hurt us any. If they sincerely desire to learn, however, we have the resources right here to give them a better view of D&D. And that's not a bad thing.
And yes, I refuse to call it OGD&D, because no matter how you slice it that's a stupid name. (I still don't even like OD&D, but that's a rant I've ranted before...)

"We snarked over the OD&D artwork before it was popular" Personnaly, I found the overall tone of the video more tongue-in-cheek and somewhat befuddled than really insulting, and reading the guys answers to comments, they seem rather good-willed and maybe genuinely interested into what the OSR community has to offer. At least they don't sound like the "D&D is a smoking pile of garbage that should be pulled behind the barn and be put off of its misery" articles that you can read sometimes on Places to go, people to be or some RuneQuest fora

~200,000 views with 2 million+ subs, a you-tube partnership, and ad-sense is like 200 dollars a video.
So whatever 20 dollars they make from this video, they deserve it, because they provided us with about 10 minutes and 2 posts worth of forum entertainment each.

I have to ask, what are we all arguing about, and why the fervor, especially in that last post, Gene?
This is just a ridiculously absurd online video, as the title of the thread says. Does this really serve as a reason to become overly confrontational, among ourselves?
Thread locked for review, until Fin decides what to do with it.
