I get to run an OD&D game this weekend! Notes and encounters mapped for a kind of Tekumel/ Barsoom sword and planet dungeon crawl.
I have thought about using a modification to the weapon damages by giving each weapon a damage factor which is the max it can deal and however many points at or above the character's to hit number thier die roll is it does that much damage up to the weapon DF.
I also wanted to houserule an instant kill or vanquish/subdue critical hit and thought about using the EPT rule (follow a 20 with 19 or 20 and you slay or subdue opponent) but thought about trying a system whereby a natural roll of 20 not only does max DF but is followed by a second d20 roll, the second roll being directly added to the damage amount, making it range from very serious to straight up lethal.
Depending how high I make the DF (cue Holmes weapon damage variables) it might mean a lower level character couldn't deal max weapon damage with a hit roll against very high AC. But this would change as thier to hit number gets lower as they progress, reflecting, arguably, greater prowess with thier weapon not just to hit but to hit more effectively. And even low level characters can score a critical. Of course, it doesnt allow for larger HD creatures to be instantly killed, but could say if the second D20 roll in a crit is also a 20, thats instant kill no matter the damage spread.
I would be interested in your thoughts.
