Saw this on Dragonsfoot and thought I'd pass it along here. Zahn is my favorite Star Wars author.

As I've noted elsewhere, this brings the character into canon, not the previously de-canonized novels. I always liked most* of what Zahn wrote as the best of the mixed bag of the old EU, but I'd prefer to not have even his previous stories shoehorned in to the new canon.
*Zahn is the one who made, or first wrote about, what is in my opinion an execrable decision - that Leia never became a Jedi. That much, at least, appears to have become enough of a sacred cow that it persists in the new canon.

I'd prefer to not have even his previous stories shoehorned in to the new canon. Yeah, the fact that Zahn is onboard with a new novel for an old character could prove to be a little awkward for him. If he likes some element of Thrawn's past, how much does he re-write and re-sell to the public, and what if some Thrawn thing contradicts something from the non-canon books. This path could lead to madness. I like the character overall, however, and I think he was a lot stronger as a bad guy than what we got in film VII. I am hoping that he has a decent role in future Star Wars canon.

Transplanting him to the Rebels era is probably the best way to salvage the character out of the old EU. Side note: I may be tilting against windmills, but I definitely want to deflect any "Return of the EU" hopefuls from seizing upon this news as a banner for their cause.

The way I look at it, The Thrawn Trilogy is literature. I’m not sure if I have a “cause;” I just can’t get too worked up about the whole question of canon/non-canon. It’s transitory and meaningless.

Hehe, was going to edit my post a little, then got distracted by other stuff.
The thing is, just how many times has SW retconned their canon? Wasn't the old (post-Zahn) EU the third or fourth installment of such an "expanded universe", already? And when did those changes have another sort of motivation than "we want to make more money from the old stuff"? I think not.
For me, the post-VII EU lacks a lot of the charme the old material had - but then again, at 33, am I really the target group Disney is selling their stuff to? Does it really matter if there are different continuities out there? The SW-Zahnverse lasted for probably 100 novels, if not more. Even if they become completely OOP, I think I will have supplies. Like, I know that some darker corners of the internet are getting very worked up about it, but, well, what should I say? Doesn't touch me at all.
What I do care about a bit, though, is that they show SW some love - and that's what the new EU has not really done so far: I think we can all agree that EVII was not the most imaginative of movies, in terms of plot and characters; I think we can also agree that the new additions to the EU have seemed either random, so far. I hope that is not the case with the Thrawn novel, to return to the topic. The first Thrawn trilogy, and the "Outbound Flight" novel are really among the best "old" SW had to offer. If Zahn now has to return to write, what, a very streamlined version of the story arc, I'd like to see that it's done with the same diligence as the earlier books.

Thrawn is one of my all-time favorite villains. I'm looking forward to the book.

Thrawn is one of my all-time favorite villains. Mine too. Which is why it's a shame that he's getting such a demotion to become a minor menace to a bunch of C-list heroes. It isn't even fair to say that this new Thrawn is actually Thrawn. Just a new copycat character meant to feed off of the greatness of the original. A mini-me version.
