Let's face it, most people who play D&D also collect the books. It's a gaming hobby, but is also a lot more than that.
Seeing this guy's OD&D collection makes my draw drop. So I must ask out of sheer curiosity, how many copies of OD&D do you own?
Personally, I only have the WOTC reprints so far, but have just ordered a set of the original 3 LBB off of eBay and I couldn't be more excited.

I have one excellent set of the booklets, excellent because I printed and stapled them myself. I would really like an original box set with all the supplements stuffed in there, but I wouldn't be willing to pay more than $100 ($150 for everything). Obviously that's not going to happen, but that's about what they'd be worth to me. Even if I did have them, I wouldn't ever use them at the table, but rather have them just to ... have them. My precious...
Congrats on your purchase, though. Maybe someday I'll join your ranks.

I have three copies. A 5th printing (mine) and a 4th printing (from a friend) and a later printing of some sort (reader copy). My older ones are kept in the closet where they are safe.

First of all, I'm just crazy jealous of that guy's collection. Now, as to my copies...
No, I need more time to process. A whole library of OD&D boxed sets? I'll be back.

I own two boxes (OCE) with excellent condition booklets and reference sheets. I also have a fifth printing (with Hobbits/Balrogs) and a sixth printing (no Balrogs) set as loose booklets. And I have the boxed set reprints that WotC released a couple of years back.
Also, I own a couple of books that are printings of OD&D from Lulu. One is a digest size hardback that reprints the OCE set, the other is a version that changes the layout and restructures the book to be organized like the Moldvay B/X booklets, and incorporates some of the text from the OD&D FAQ.

One original first printing plus supplements, one set of printed out PDFs of the old PDFs, and the old and new PDFs.

Just the one set of printed copies of the original three booklets (not sure what edition, but pre-1980) and all supplements (except Chainmail and Swords and Spells.) And PDFs. Not really a collector, and my "collection" wouldn't amount to much: my printed copies are intact and not torn or anything like that, but they aren't in great condition. Paper's kind of yellow, and the area around the staples seems loose and kind of brownish. The box and ready ref sheets are long gone.

Just one set I ran across in a used book store years ago. And a pdf copy. I won't pay outrageous collector prices so that's all I'll own.

I only own one copy of white box D&D, and it is the 6th or 7th edition. I have CHAINMAIL, the white box, and first three supplements, but they are not what I'd call 'collector worthy'... More like reading copies. I just had to have them for my own reference. I've never even played that version of OD&D, I started with Holmes, moved on to Moldvay, and then to AD&D 1st edition which is still my favorite version of D&D to this day.

Out of curiosity, how much were they selling it for at the used book store? Someone on reddit found the White box for $5 at a Yard Sale last year, included were the 3 LBB, a handful of old dice, and 3 lead miniatures.

I've got the PDFs but in the material world I've never even seen a copy of OD&D (Outside of photos, obviously). I don't even think any of the OSR-leaning gamers I hang out with have one. I would certainly get one if I had the opportunity to do so without breaking the bank (And one of the local cons around here has a GREAT auction each Summer, so it's not impossible).
I'm sorta embarrassed to admit this, but when I first entered the hobby in the early 80's the crowd of older gamers I played with referred to the Moldvay/Cook Basic set as "The Original" so I didn't even know about OD&D or David Arneson until college in the mid-90s when I started reading gaming history threads on the Internet.

Heh, that's the benefit of getting into the hobby in about 2007 or so, I was able to have a wealth of information and history. I'm getting my Vacation Pay sometime this month, but not taking any vacations, so it justifies my purchase. Paid $290 Canadian for a set.

Nice. I need to take the monetary plunge into a nice old set sometime. Maybe after the kid gets out of expensive daycare..

Okay. I can do this.
I have Men & Magic, 6th printing. It was a discarded library copy that was gifted to me. I have Monsters & Treasures, 5th printing. I got that cheap on e-bay once because of all the water damage on it. I have the Greyhawk supplement, 12th printing. I got that for a bargain, before the others, from a store owner who didn't see it as a collectible.
For the others I just have printouts of the e-book versions.

This whole thread is weirdly fascinating.
This oddball niche-audience early 70's toy-soldier game that a high-school-drop-out insurance salesman from Lake Geneva assembled together with his kids at their kitchen table... yet it's changed all of our lives, in ways great and small.

This oddball niche-audience early 70's toy-soldier game that a high-school-drop-out insurance salesman from Lake Geneva assembled together with his kids at their kitchen table... yet it's changed all of our lives, in ways great and small. That's what makes this whole hobby so weirdly fascinating to me. Edit : Not that anyone cares, but I'm so d**n giddy. My order shipped. The box is beautiful, despite the tape around it.. But I really don't mind. The booklets are in excellent pristine condition from what I can tell from the photos, and 2 sets of vintage dice included. I'm like a kid in a candy shop. This is why I buy this stuff at 19 years old, because I know in a few years when I'm out of the house I'll never be able to afford it.. Should be here between July 10th, and July 18th!! I may someday get the supplements, but we'll see. I have the WOTC reprints so that should be enough.. But d**n part of me wants the rest now. The only way I'd buy another MEN & MAGIC is if it was the one with the knight on the horse, which I'd love to get at some point.

I purchased a white box back in 77-78 of the 6th or 7th print. My set did not come with the reference sheets, but I still have a pink order form from the Dungeon game store and a couple of pages of ads: one is for In Search of the Unknown and Tomb of Horrors, the other is for The Dragon and Little Wars. I later had picked up Chainmail 3rd edition and the supplements through Eldritch Wizardry by the time the AD&D Player's Handbook came out. At that point, I switched to AD&D so would not acquire Gods, Demigods and Heroes until much later. I never did pick up Swords & Spells. I also received a copy of Holmes (well used, so missing the cover) from a friend. I also picked up Basic and Expert when they first came out. . . .

Two plus the recent PDFs...one is _my_ set of the 4th printing and the various supplements (3rd printing Greyhawk, 1st for the later ones). This was used extensively for several years, so it's fragile. I was happy to be able to get a reprint set for normal use when they came out (2013?). When they released the PDFs I added them so that I have it on my iPad when needed.
Now, my game has been stalled for a year...time to do something about that.

One second print Brown box that is my collection gem along with first prints of all the supplements... and a 5th print white box that is my "nicely handled" play copy. Also have an extra first print Greyhawk as part of the play set. I have yet to get a copy of the recent reprints. Fun read for all of them though!

Not sure of printings...have an Original Collectors Ed. (OCE) that I bought back in the '80s and accumulated all the sups (various prints) after, along with Chainmail. Bought another complete set off of Geoffrey who posts here. Sprang for the old PDFs when Wizbro first offered them and also sprang for the reprints in the fancy wooden chest they offered a few years back. Never played full on OD&D but used Greyhawk extensively in my B/X games.

Lets see. Sold my first print box set a while back to finance a trip to Gen Con. I have a 5th printing and an OCE set now as well as the old and new wizbro pdfs and the physical reprints. Like cadriel, I've also accumulated at least 3 of the different versions from Lulu.

One set of the OD&D booklets and the reprint box set. Originally, I told myself that I'd justify paying for the reprint box set by selling the original white box, but I found I couldn't bring myself to do it.
