Watching the old animated Hobbit film tonite I was once again troubled by the question, who is "Theodore"? A one name credit is always of interest to me.
I was quite amazed to discover who he actually was. A monologuist and comedian--with record albums going back at least as far as 1959.
I knew him only as the original film voice of Gollum--but his standup is quite mesmerizing.
His comic routine largely consisted of advocating for a return to Quadrupedilism...bipedalism being the root of all human ills.
Didn't know where to post this but hope you enjoy.

Holocaust survivor, chess hustler, and Beatnik legend... Brother Theodore was awesome.
Plus, he's tied with with William S. Burroughs for "Best All-Time Creepy Old Wizard Voice".

Thanks Ritt!--new stuff to look up. he definitely had the creepy wizard voice. He's very funny as a semi-regular on the Letterman show when it was big. Did not know he was a voice of the Beats! Will look into!

I'm a HUGE fan of Brother Theodore, in my opinion the best Gollum ever. (Andy Serkis just didn't do it for me.) Rankin-Bass Hobbit was powerful stuff to me as a little kid, and it still holds up well when I watch it as an adult. Tom Hanks fans will also recognize Theodore from his small role in The Burbs. In an interview on Letterman he described the movie as "a great success for Tom Hanks... which I resent because success in others always rubs me the wrong way."
