The Black Hack is a super-streamlined roleplaying game that uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game as a base, and could well be the most straightforward modern OSR compatible clone available. If speed of play and character creation, compatibility, and simple - yet elegant rules are what you yearn for. Look no further!
The Black Hack is a fast playing game and the rules can be picked up in minutes. The full rules fit in a single 20 page A5 book!Well, there's the blurb - I have the Beta version and it's a neat little ruleset that bases rolls on Ability Checks. If you thought Whitehack wasn't D&D-enough, Searchers of the Unknown too minimal or Into The Odd wasn't fantasy-enough, well, here's your new favourite game. .......and it's cheap as chips !

Backed for the PDF but guarantee I'll bump up to score those stretch goals before it's over. Can't wait!

That's funny--I impulsively backed this a couple days before this tread appeared. It does look awesome, and it's plowing through stretch goals...

I need another ruleset like I need mouth cancer. I hope it is good though and enjoyable for those that grab it!

I play S&W Whitebox, how much more streamlined can it get? It doesn't even have (read: need) ability score rolls!

Looks pretty slick, I think I'll be backing this one, especially with all the stretch goals!

Just downloaded and skimmed my PDF copy - looks interesting enough that I'll probably give it a run within the month. One negative is that there are no spell descriptions - judging from the names they're all pretty standard Holmes / B/X / BECMI edition spells (which one, though?), but it would be nice to have that in the book. At 20 pages a few extra pages of ulra-short spell descriptions in tabular form (like the monsters) would have been nice. I might have to cobble my own together and insert the pages when I print out the booklet for table use.

Agree with Vile, no spell details are the only negative. Will be running this soon. Looks good.

The good news is that spell descriptions will be added! Seriously, every publisher should move to a PDF-first, print-when-everyone-is-happy model.

Yeah, that immediately struck me as bizarre--especially as it sets itself up as a complete game.
There are some really unique bits to the system--the hit/dodge system, frex, as well as the way armor works. Somehow I feel though, after really reading it, that I may be more likely to cherry-pick than to run it as its own thing...

I always like to run a game RAW before making any decisions about cherry-picking or house-ruling. 5E really brought home to me why I started doing that, many AEONS™ ago, because on first reading there were a lot of things in 5E that I would have tweaked. Now, I mostly stick with the hacks in the DMG. I'll probably run this for a while with one of my face-to-face groups, followed by Whitehack. Let's see where things go from there. BLUEHACK™?

Just got my Kickstarter pack in the mail! The final product is great little adventure game--the greatest praise I can give it is that it immediately made me want to sit down and make a dungeon. After reading it a few times (easy to do at only 18 pages), I think I'd largely play it as written, too, which is unusual for me these days. The physical product itself is really nice--great layout, nice paper, textured cover. The only complaint I have is with the organization of the rules themselves, in that the presentation of information seems more stream-of-consciousness than actually planned. However, again, at 18 pages, with a clear layout, it's easy to find what you need. I heartily recommend it, and have put it high on my priority list to take for a spin!

I've also picked up the Class Hack and the Race Hack documents from RPGNow, and they provide some easy-to-use additions to the basic system.

Two more documents with additional classes for the Black Hack have emerged on RPGNow--Hack of Class and Eight of Wands. There are some new classes not covered in the Class Hack--Poisoner, Illusionist, Smuggler, etc.--plus alternate versions of the Barbarian, Druid, Paladin, and others. So, for an extra two bucks, a lot of variety to choose from. Also, there's the Cthulhu Hack, taking the system into Lovecrafian territory for a more action-oriented approach to the Mythos. Even if you prefer a traditional fantasy setting for your game, rather than the 1920s-1930s, you can easily import all of the Cthulhu Hack monsters into your campaign.
