I guess I've been playing the wrong game the past 35 years.

I guess I've been playing the wrong game the past 35 years. Yes, but the good news is you still have time to mend your ways, by Crom!

More of a postrock/hardcore guy, myself, but a bit of metal is never bad. For a change, I really, honestly like Amon Amarth.
If you're looking for fantasy-themed fun, I seriously recommend this band, though. Also, if you want to roll against madness:

More of a punk rocker myself.
D&D background music for me is usually some kind of lonely, haunting or eery ambient music like Brian Eno's, etc.

I must be old. For me D&D has always been Dio's Holy Diver and Blue Oyster Cult's Black Blade

bycrom, I just can't relate, though I do realize there is a vast array of music that has played in the background for all of us. I am hoping that no one posts ABBA in this regard. The Dragonforce hysteria just baffles me. It's as if the lovechild of Dream Theater and Europe were discovered by millennials and hipsters and raised up, because they're older siblings/parents were wise enough to shield them from the abomination that was the former.

Not a big dragonforce fan to begin with. Song was alright, obviously was not a live recording though. That microphone technique by the singer is just horrid. Please, if you ever sing, never cup the mic. The reduced amount of feedback, and the improved quality of sound will make everyone respect you more.
I prefer to think of more classic hard rock for my D&D. Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc..

In recent years (the past 10-15) I've moved on to Dark Ambient music for getting into a Sword-n-Sorcery (or spooky SciFi) vibe. If it has to be Metal, then Black Sabbath hits that sweet spot, with general 1970s "classic rock" a close second.
Do people really listen to a lot of Metal any more? It was overshadowed in the early 90s by grunge (ick), and later on, by Nu-Metal (double ick). I guess I've mellowed out in my 40s: I listen to the genres that I neglected in my youth, like Opera, Jazz, Folk, and Classical. I listen to what I want and am no longer subject to peer pressure.

In a more game-related sense, I have been known to use either ambient sound effects (the Dark Dreams app is a good example), or, indeed, slow instrumental music. The Tristram theme from the classic "Diablo" videogame is one of my favorite choices. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8Metal at the gaming table, never. Too loud.

The music I most remember from my group's game sessions were Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries and Queen's We Are the Champions.

Meh. Along with classic and prog rock standards, I dig things like Bo Hansson. Also some of the recent doom and stoner bands (Orchid, Earth, Naam, etc.). I discovered Hansson by accident, coming across an old copy of his LotR album in a second-hand store in 1992. It quickly became a fave. In fact, "Fog on the Barrow-Downs" is one of my most fave songs of all time. First three songs here. "Fog..." begins at 7:07. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rs0AmruS8Ro
