OD&D:
1) Roll 3d6 in order 6 times. 2) "He's a fighter."
Okay, we're done here. Somebody fetch me a beer.

This guy has no idea what he's talking about. I skipped around a bit; in every spot he spouts revisionist or just plain wrong history. For instance, "They had not yet figured out that the rules of the game did not have to produce the setting they expected. [...] Gygax and the other designers working at the time looked at the rules as an engine to generate a world." Um... no.

And I'm not sure, but I think I saw the previous video he refers to, the one he did for OD&D. And I vaguely recall it being wrong as well. Not maliciously wrong; he sounds kind of amiable. But he's just got some very odd interpretations of what's going on in the text. Edit to Add: Here is his video on making an OD&D character.

Edit to Add: Here is his video on making an OD&D character. I made it 15 minutes into the video before I got bored and tired of the pedantry. Skipping ahead, it looks like he didn't get to the point of creating the Fighting-Man until 30 minutes in.

I agree with talysman that he seems well intended. So who is going to write to him to join the board so as to be slowly disabused of all his misunderstandings?

I don't know, I actually enjoy watching, listening, or reading this sort of stuff where a person analyzes the text. They always make some intersting observations that make you take a closer look and evaluate a different point of view.
I'm not saying I sat through an entire hour of this guy rolling up a fighter without skipping ahead, but I did catch a few tid bits. For instance, did you guys know that only a fighting man could break down doors?!

For the truly lazy (or diceless), you can make an OD&D character simply by clicking this link: character.totalpartykill.ca/lbb/If you want plaintext output instead of HTML, click this: character.totalpartykill.ca/lbb/text/Furthermore, you can generate characters specifically for the Pahvelorn, Apolyon, and Carcosa campaign settings. Besides LBB characters, Holmes, B/X and LotFP are also supported! (This random generator was discussed previously in the thread: Random Character Generator.)

1) Roll 3d6 in order 6 times. 7 times. Gimme dat GOLD! Course, the ref does step 1) and the player does step 2), so the workload is further distributed Admittedly, the player also has to do choose alignment, name, and go shopping. For instance, did you guys know that only a fighting man could break down doors?! How so derv? My copy of U&WA says: "doors must be forced open by strength" and that "there can be up to three characters attempting to force open a door".

I guess I should have used that wink, wink emoticon You're going to have to watch the whole 57 minutes now to find out where he said it

I guess I should have used that wink, wink emoticon You're going to have to watch the whole 57 minutes now to find out where he said it Yeah, that's kind of the general level of error in the videos. A bunch of tiny, odd errors, usually due to skipping over something. Like the statement that only thieves and listen at doors, because listening at doors is mentioned as a thief ability, but he missed the base chance of listening at doors mentioned in U&WA. Or the odd focus on dwarf detection of sloping passages as a useless ability, somehow missing that it's just one example of a package of abilities that includes detecting traps, moving walls, and new construction. The only thing that really bugs me is his constant emphasis on how "weird" various rules are. And it's all innocuous stuff.

Or, perhaps, that the dwarf ability actually enables him to detect slanting, not sloping, passages which means (as shown in area 3 of the sample dungeon, U&WA p5) the dwarf won't get lost underground so easily. A potentially life-saving advantage!

He's commenting on the fly rather than reading beforehand and preparing his commentary. That's the chief flaw. To his defense, he may be trying to "recreate" the "first exposure" experience of someone who gets the book and tries to generate a character immediately.

As I tend to hang out chiefly in places where everyone knows more about OD&D than me, I actually like to see a fresh pair of eyes looking at this stuff.

What caused me to tune out was the amount of time he spent on the Thief. What has that got to do with creating a fighter? That is after all what the video is allegedly about. (Also it was getting late.)
But I might have to go back and look at the '74 video.
