Last night I was in a comic shop for the first time in a long time and picked up a few comics. Out of nostalgia and curiosity one of the comics I bought was the first issue of Marvel's new WEIRDWORD, a tie-in to Marvel's big SECRET WARS Summer cross-over.
The 70's incarnation of WW was Marvel trying to imitate Tolkein. It had great "70's Hippy Fantasy" art by Mike Ploog and others but was a pretty average tale of elves on a quest. The new 2015 WW is much more gonzo and balls-out: Arkon (An obscure 70's Avengers character who's basically King Conan with the serial numbers filed off) is trapped on Weirdworld, a psychedelic nightmare world made up of the jumbled pieces of different alternate worlds smashed together, a post-apocalyptic warpscape of flying islands where Dr. Doom is worshiped as a God. It's very, very much like the 4e boxed set version of GAMMA WORLD from a few years back. His daily life is nothing but constantly fighting monsters. His prized possession is a tattered map, possibly made on human skin, of his travels so far: It has entries like "Crypt of the Man-Maggots", "Caves of the Devil Dinos", and "Cannibal Convoys" (It would make an awesome sandbox map). In the first issue alone Arkon fights squidsharks and gun-ogres on cyborg rhinos, briefly rides a cyborg dragon, and then gets captured by apes in diving suits (from Apelantis) who work for Morgan Le Fay.
I was pleasantly surprised by this: Even though it's a modern comic with very modern art the story had a very 70's feel. Unlike many recent comics it wasn't "Decompressed" and the whole thing was pretty much all action. Good stuff.
