One of our local stores (The only one I know of in a 50 mile radius that even participates in FRPG Day) turns the event into a kind of one-day mini-con. I ran D&D 5th Ed for a group of players I had never met before. I was a little nervous at first but it went _FANTASTIC!_ Most fun I've had in a long time, everyone was very enthusiastic and there was a lot of energy at the table. I was kinda worried that the complexity of D&DV's many powers and spells would be a problem but everyone grasped things very quickly, even the guy who had never played any version of D&D before. Really restored my faith in gaming. Wish I could stayed and ran another game but we got chased out by a tornado (Ah, Summer in the Forsaken Wastes of Illinois).
EDIT: And is it just me, or was the art on the Dungeon Crawl Classics DM's Screen that Goodman Games was giving away really stunning? That artist really nailed that hard-to-define psychedelic 70's sword-and-sorcery paperback look.

That's Doug Kovacs and I highly recommend you check out some of the DCC RPG offerings over the past couple years-tons of great artwork.

The thing I dig about his work is that it feels a lot more "Paperback" than it does "Gaming book", if that makes any sense at all.

Seems to me you mean it evokes source material, rather than just another game designer's version of same. And if so, I wholly agree.

For the last two years I've been going to Noble Knights to get any Free RPG Day goods I'm interested in. I use to go to my FLGS for the occasion until the proprietor flaked out on my wife one day when she tried to return a small item (Carcasonne mini expansion that was missing a piece) that was part of a larger purchase. Prior to that, I made a point of supporting the store even though it was not really that close to me and I could easily purchase most things online cheaper. If it was me she had the pychotic episode on, I would have probably brushed it off. But I know my wife, she's the patient and more tactful one out of us. So now, Free RPG Day has become an annual reminder to me of the poor etiquette that transpired. Anyway, on to better things.
The catch with Noble Knights is that you have to purchase $15 worth of murchandise for each Free RPG item that they charge .01 cent for.
I ended up getting the DCC Judges Screen, C&C Shadows of a Green Sky, and since my son likes dice, the Free RPG Day d6.
I'd like to share two of my actual purchases too, since others might be interested in them. There had been some talk about "average dice" at another time on here. I picked up a pair made by Four Horsemen Enterprises for .95 cents. They're white. One with red lettering and the other has green. In comparison, the Zocchi pair goes for $3.95. So, they're an inexpensive option if you're looking for averaging dice.
The other item I picked up was Strategy & Tactics #137. It contains the game called Men-At-Arms by James Dunnigan and Albert Nofi. Many will recognize those names. What I wasn't aware of was that the issue also contained an article also titled "Men-At-Arms: Tactical Combat 1200 BC-1500 AD" by Dave Arneson. It's a nice historical overview of the development of tactics, arms and armor.

But Decision games published errata/advanced rules in Moves magazine. One helpful BGGer consolidated them, as you can see in this link: boardgamegeek.com/thread/750369/improved-rulesYou may still be able to get a copy from him. Meanwhile I wish you joy of your purchases, and I'm envious of the Arneson article. (I may have to go hunt that issue down...)

The folks over at BoardGameGeek were not kind to this game, at least in its original form. But Decision games published errata/advanced rules in Moves magazine. Yes, it seems some found the game not up to snuff. Though, some of the criticism seems a little trivial to me- counter graphics, square grid instead of hex, map graphics? To me, most of those things simply reflect an earlier aesthetic common to the designer. The draw of the game is the wide time span that it covers and the simple scenario set ups. I guess I'll have to see for myself if it's truly unplayable or clunky. I can't really complain either way since I didn't even pay the original cover price for the magazine. Thanks for the link. I've been an inactive member of BGG for a few years. For the life of me, I can not get the PM function to work on the site. Not sure why? It always wants me to verify my e-mail, then still does not allow me to PM. I guess I'll probably have to look into Issue#68 of Moves for the errata instead.
