Do any wargamers here have any affiliation with the Society of Ancients? Can any give testament to the contents/quality of their periodical SLINGSHOT? I just ordered their CD-ROM of all back-issues and am eagerly awaiting its arrival in the post. I've never seen it in stores in magazine racks and don't know anyone who had a subscription to it either, and I'm just curious as to what to expect. MODS: If this isn't the best place for this, feel free to move it to where it belongs.

I haven't seen an issue in years, but it's a magazine with a very high reputation. It's strongly oriented towards the English wargaming scene and the WRG Ancients rules, or at least it used to be. But I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I had a subscription for about 2 years around 2010 and 2011. The only reason I stopped was because I did not have the time to actually read the magazine! It is about 95% historical with much of it going toward the ancient period up to about 400AD or so. About half the articles are about gaming, usually in the form of a scenario or a variant of various rules. WRG is not talked about much anymore but occasionally you get an article in there specifically about WRG 6th edition. Apparently their is still a group that still plays WRG 6th edition in tournaments.
If you like history and gaming it is a pretty good magazine to get.

I just got the PDF of issues 1-273. It looks great. Although it wasn't anywhere nearly as slickly produced as, say, The Dragon or White Dwarf, it is full of great ideas for historicals wargaming, and I hope in the near future to find ways of engineering some of the content to suit a use for CM.

Slick production values are often a way to hide an otherwise inferior product. It's the content and always the content that counts. Pretty pictures are window dressing. Had I more time to read, I'd still be buying Slingshot. I may have to look into the PDF archive. Thanks for pointing that out!

Nonsense. Ask any game publisher; "slick" production values have been driven by the consumer. "Slingshot" was essentially a club magazine.
Here's a hint: check circulation figures.
...why, yes, I do have a degree in business, as well as experience working in the game industry, thanks for asking...
