Has anyone gotten a copy of the new, relaunched Ares magazine? The physical subscription copy has a game and there are articles which are available in the digital version. I don't have any idea if there is widespread distribution. www.aresmagazine.com/Looks kind of interesting but I'd like to read anyone's take on this if they have read the first issue.

Sweet to see them back! - But, yeah, I am also more like "awaiting the reviews", than to buy straight in.

Hmmm. I'm not so sure about this. The old ARES was a wargame magazine with some articles about other things sprinkled throughout. This one seems to be all fiction and articles, and much about the planet Mars. I'm not sure it's "back" at all but instead is something totally different with the same name. This is just from me looking at the website. I haven't seen a physical copy of the thing. I just remember that ARES had cool games in it like "Barbarian Kings" and "The Stainless Steel Rat" and "Albion Land of Fairie" and I don't see anything remotely like this in their table of contents.

Agreed Finarvyn. That's one reason I didn't back it on Kickstarter.
Do love Barbarian Kings. A couple years ago I hunted down a copy of that issue off eBay. Now to find time and opponents

This looks interesting. I might have to get this (I've always loved the War of the Worlds).
If I do, I'll let you guys know what I think of it.

It looks a lot more like analog to me. If a magazine is about science, fiction, and board games it really could use some articles about boardgames.

How do you guys go with hobby-related magazines, in general? - Like, I don't read Kobold Quartely, nor the Gygax magazine; not because of any sort of bias, but because it's kind of *a lot* of gaming stuff over the month already, with newsletters, fora, and so on. Now, I enjoy the occasional short story magazine, like, say, Locus Mag, in the English-speaking world. I am also a pretty unashamed lover of the Paris Review, but that one's not really fantasy-related.

I like Gygax magazine in part because it means I get something in the mail occasionally. Same with the Crusader (TLG; C&C) if/when it gets published. The thing I misss about Dragon most (even the 3E version) is that I liked getting a physical thing in the mail monthly.

I like Gygax myself. It brings back good memories of the best days of the Dragon. Its a good magazine in its own right. Each issue has at least one thing I'm interested in.

I agree, wholeheartedly. The magazine culture had a certain casualness to it that I miss in our hobby these days. All the high-concept, super-polished stuff that most companies throw out these days obviously has its merrits, too, but I miss the old days, in these regards. I read the old WD issues as an adult, only, but that's pretty much how I picture the perfect RPG mag to be.
